Built in 1893 by local architect Wallace L. Dow using Sioux Quartzite, the first Minnehaha County Courthouse was once the "largest courthouse between Chicago and Denver." Its interior boasts slate stairs, granite pillars, stained glass, and striking murals (1915-17) by Ole Running depicting early Dakota life. Used until 1962, it faced demolition but was saved in 1974. Today, the Old Courthouse is the Siouxland Heritage Museums, offering free exhibits over three floors, including a restored courtroom.
