Most Lancaster barn venues allow significant customization for décor, lighting, and layouts—though it's wise to confirm restrictions with each venue, as some protect original architectural elements or have specific rules about what can be hung or installed.
Many barns embrace uplighting and string lights, which complement the rustic aesthetic and work beautifully during Pennsylvania's warm-season weddings (May–October). Fabric draping, floral installations, and table arrangements are typically permitted, giving you freedom to soften or modernize the raw barn character.
Outdoor spaces—common in Mount Joy and Ephrata venues—offer flexibility for ceremony layouts and cocktail areas, though weather contingencies matter in the region. When booking, ask about:
- Lighting and electrical capacity
- Restrictions on nails, hooks, or adhesives
- Built-in tables, bars, or other fixtures you can work with or around
Top-rated venues like Melhorn Manor and Stoltzfus Homestead & Gardens have extensive experience accommodating custom visions, so ask to see portfolios of past events to gauge what's possible.
Barn venues vary widely in what they provide, so it's important to ask before booking. Some barns come with basic structures like tables, chairs, and lighting, while others offer a blank canvas where you bring in everything. Many venues in the $4,250 median starting price range include the building itself, restrooms, and parking—but décor customization often costs extra.
Here's what to clarify with your venue:
- Whether linens, centerpieces, and floral arrangements are included or rented separately
- If the venue provides uplighting, string lights, or other ambient lighting
- What happens if weather requires moving indoors (some barns have covered areas)
- Whether you can bring in outside decorators or if they have preferred vendors
- If ceremony and reception spaces both allow full customization
Most barn venues love personalization—that's part of their charm. Get a detailed walkthrough of what's included in your package, and don't hesitate to ask for photos of other weddings to see decoration possibilities. This helps you budget accurately for flowers, rentals, and design elements.
For a 100-guest wedding in Lancaster, you can expect to spend between $27,400 and $41,200, according to the Zola Wedding Cost Index. This is notably lower than the national median of $25,000 for all weddings, and well below metro area averages.

- Venue: ~$5,057
- Florists: ~$4,791
- Catering: ~$4,046
- Bar services: ~$3,237
- Photography: ~$3,141
