How We Met

May 2013

Tyler's story: Ty was living and working in Athens, Georgia as a nurse. After 2 years of experience, she got her first travel nurse assignment in September 2012: Ketchikan, Alaska. She was initially scheduled to be there for only 6 weeks but she liked Ketchikan and agreed to extend her contract for another 13 weeks. She extended several more times until April 2013 when she decided she should either leave Ketchikan for her next assignment, or stay for the summer. In Ketchikan she found an incredible community of people through the hospital and roller derby. She decided she would stay on at the hospital as a regular employee for ONE summer to fish and camp and enjoy the sunnier side of Southeast Alaska. That fateful May, 2013, Tyler made plans to meet her friend Umeko at the Sourdough bar to have a drink or two. Tony's story: Tony was born in Chewelah, Washington and first began visiting Ketchikan during the summers of his childhood. His mom, Chrissy, grew up in Ketchikan but left as soon as she graduated high school. Her heart was still in Montana where she had been born and had spent summers visiting. She would bring Tony and her other kids to Ketchikan to visit her siblings, parents, aunts, uncles, and cousins still living there. When he was 16, Tony decided to come work for his Uncle Larry during his summer vacation from school. He returned each summer through high school and college, working various fishing jobs. After living down south (the Lower 48) for a few years, he returned to Ketchikan to run a fishing tender for a family friend. In May 2013, Tony and some buddies were helping their friend Tim with some yard work. When they finished, they made plans to meet up that evening at the Sourdough Bar. Later that afternoon, as Tony and Tyler each made their way to the Sourdough, they passed the "Thundering Wings" eagle carving and happened to meet. They spent the rest of the day chatting and having fun and haven't stopped since.
