We met in late September 2011 in St. Andrews, Scotland. Erin was studying abroad for a semester, and Sean was just starting his physics degree. While we had a few mutual friends, we can credit an inauspiciously timed fire drill for bringing us together. We both lived in Andrew Melville Hall. One night, the fire alarm went off. Thankfully, there wasn't a fire. But true to form (and this was not a rare event, as we had at least one one fire drill a week!), the fire trucks took at least twenty minutes to arrive. While gathered in rows on the lawn outside the hall, shivering and wishing to return to our beds as the attendance roll was called, we struck up a conversation. Sean brought a pack of Jaffa cakes with him and he offered me one. After that, we just carried on talking. The next week, I asked Sean out for coffee. He didn't like coffee, but agreed to go along anyway. We ended up getting Dr. Noodles instead. We never got tired of talking to each other (or eating delicious treats!) The rest, I guess, is history.
