We met in Pamplona in December 2020. Mary had just moved to Spain two months prior to teach English, and Miguel was working as an ICU nurse during COVID. Introduced by a mutual friend, we first met in the plaza with our roommates for dinner but, when no tables were free, we all ended up back at Mary’s apartment for drinks. The next day, Miguel texted: “Hey Mary! I’m Miguel, the Spanish guy.” Our second date was nearly canceled by a massive snowstorm that stranded Mary in the mountain town of Soria after all buses were shut down. Determined, Miguel bought snow chains just for the trip and drove hours through the blizzard to get her. When the roads closed on the drive back, they found themselves stuck for the night in a hotel of a random tiny town, sharing pizza and their first movie together. From that rescue on, the story kept writing itself.
