Steve & Liv met while working for Arcadis, sitting a few cubicles down from one another. The first year was filled with coy glances, nervous laughs, and Liv hoping Steve would finallyyy come to an office Happy Hour so she could see him outside of the office.
By early 2017, Liv & Steve were slated for a few weeks of field work...just the two of them. They had days of groundwater sampling in the nonstop rain and of digging a hole for literal hours trying to grab a soil sample, getting to know each other all the while. They worked really well as a team. Liv recalls leaving the 12+ hour days dirty and tired, but excited for the next day by his side. At the end of their last project, they knew that was it - they didn't have any other field work on the calendar and if they wanted to see each other, they'd have to make it happen. On April 1st (the very next day), after a day of snapchatting incessantly, Liv asked Steve out to the bars after a Gonzaga Final Four game (that the Zags won) and they've been April fools ever since.
Steve & Liv were planning to camp with some friends on the beach in Reedsport, OR, which is just south of Heceta Head Lighthouse - a lighthouse Liv & Steve had been wanting to check out for years (Steve has a thing for lighthouses and this is a particularly picturesque one). They explored the lighthouse area on a Saturday morning with their puppy, Ash, before meeting up with friends for camping that afternoon. After playing fetch with Ash on the beach, they made their way to a trail to the lighthouse. Steve decided to run to the car for his jacket (he wasn't cold, he just needed something with a pocket to put the ring box in). Further up on the trail, there was a gift shop that advertised selling beer. Unbeknownst to Liv, Steve saw this as an opportunity to calm his nerves and proceeded to drink a beer at ~11 AM. The trail continues uphill above the lighthouse, offering some beautiful views of the rugged coast and rocks offshore. At a viewpoint, the trail curls inland and there's an unofficial trail that offshoots up a steep, muddy hill, skirting the cliff. Steve yelled out "I just saw a whale!" in efforts to get Liv to turn around and find him down on one knee at the viewpoint, but instead, she ran up this muddy offshoot trail to get a better look. Steve hobbled after her on one knee and finally yelled her name to get her attention. Liv turned around and immediately slipped in the mud, sliding down the hill on her butt towards him, and stopped when her face was right in front of the ring. He popped the question, and she let out a "yes" in between laughs.
