It's a LOT of work trying to plan a wedding on such short notice- let alone a DIY reception at a state park without electricity! So all the details are still being worked out. The pavilion where the ceremony and reception will take place is the remains of a stone lodge built in 1908, with open cut-outs where the windows and doors had been, and a new, vaulted (green!!) metal roof. My team of helpers will arrive early to transform the 100 year old lodge into an enchanted, medieval/ethereal setting (thank you helpers/angels!)! More specifics to come, but for now I'd say the ceremony will begin around 11am or 12pm. The reception (aka laid back party) will follow directly after and we'll bless and share a buffet style meal of local farm fare catered by Freund's Farm Market. There WILL be music and dancing (we'll have a generator). We have to wrap up at 7pm so we have an hour to pack and clear out by 8pm when the park closes. Nearby Infinity Hall is a great spot to keep the partying going!

Ceremony

12:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Dennis Hill State Park
Norfolk Historic District, CT 06058

Attire: We’ll be outdoors in August (but in the cool shade of stone lodge) and there’s a neat hiking trail to a gazebo lookout with a nice view, so bring sandals or decent walking shoes. I myself will be wearing flat sandals! Summer dresses, light pants, and button down collared shirts with short or rolled-up sleeves would fit the bill. Bring shorts if you worry you’ll get hot- stay comfortable!

The 240 acres of Dennis Hill State Park were once the estate of Frederic S. Dennis, a NYC doctor who summered in Norfolk. In 1908 he had architect Alfredo S.G. Taylor design the bungalow at the summit. Here he hosted numerous luminaries of the day, including steel magnate Andrew Carnegie, President William Howard Taft, and conductor Walter Damrosch. The building, a significant example of local summer estate architecture, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Dennis gifted his estate to the state in 1935. The stone walls keep the space cool and shaded, and the floor is level and great for dancing (so if you want to change into heels, it's an option!). Parking is limited to 50 cars at the base of the hill and is still open to the public hiking in the park, so carpooling is advised. We are working on arranging some sort of shuttle system, more details to come. We encourage able-bodied folks to enjoy the nature walk up the paved road to the privately reserved bungalow :)
