When Alan landed in Bogotá in 2019, he was already fiendishly swiping on Tinder. One day, he received a message at 4am from an aspiring electrical engineer caught in the middle of final exams, Richard. They hit it off, and on their first date spent nearly 18 hours together, attending Bogotá Pride, getting caught in the pouring rain, complaining about the Game of Thrones Series Finale, eating, drinking, and dancing bachata and merengue until dawn! Quickly afterwards, Alan and Richard knew that what they had was something special, and despite the looming date when Alan had to return to the United States, continued spending time together, cultivating a deep love for one another. Through lock-downs and closed borders, distanced graduations and birthday celebrations, Alan and Richard remained connected, watching movies from afar, discussing daily news, playing virtual Uno, and FaceTiming each other every night. At the end of each year, they reunited to spend time together in Bogotá, slowly building and expanding each others' networks through friends, family, and community members that slowly became part of each of their lives. On the eve of their 5th anniversary, Alan and Richard were wandering the center of Tlaquepaque, Jalisco, when they came across a jewelry store. Alan pulled Richard into the store, saying that they'd spent 5 years saying they would measure rings together, but never had. After finding 2 that they both liked, they bought them both, wandered over to a beautiful cantina, ordered 2 Modelos, and Alan asked Richard, "so, what are we?" Richard, in a sarcastic tone, responded, "Well what do you think we are?" Engaged, that's what they were! Alan and Richard are so excited to take this long-awaited next step in their relationship, and are even more excited to share this moment with those whom we love deeply. Alan y Richard supieron que tenían algo especial, y a pesar de que la fecha de salida de Alan se acercaba, continuaron pasando tiempo juntos, fortaleciendo su amor. De cuarentenas y fronteras cerradas, graduaciones y cumpleaños a distancia, Alan y Richard han mantenido su conexión viendo películas, jugando juegos, y hablando por FaceTime todas las noches. Cada fin de año, se reunían para pasar las fiestas juntos, construyendo y expandiendo sus redes de amigos, familia, y comunidades y volviéndolos parte de sus vidas. En la víspera de su quinto aniversario, Alan y Richard estaban caminando por el centro de Tlaquepaque, Jalisco cuando encontraron una joyería. Alan jaló a Richard hacia la entrada, diciéndole que en los 5 años que habían estado juntos, nunca se habían medido anillos. Después de encontrar unos que les gustaron, los compraron y se fueron a una cantina, pidieron 2 Modelos, y Alan le preguntó a Richard, "¿Qué somos?" Richard, en su tono sarcástico respondió, "¿Tú qué crees que somos?" Prometidos, ¡eso es lo que eran!
