Well, it all started when Greg’s car was stolen. Certainly he never thought he’d be thanking those hooligans today! Greg had just graduated from College of Charleston in May of 2018 and was set to move back home to New Jersey, but was forced to stay in Charleston for a bit longer while they sorted out the whole car situation. Meanwhile, Claudia, Maggie’s Maid of Honor, was planning her birthday dinner and invited all her best girl friends as well as her boyfriend at the time. Her boyfriend asked to invite one of his friends so he wasn't the only guy, and thankfully, she permitted it. He had been talking with Greg the day of her dinner and invited him to join. All the girls knew Greg casually as they ran in the same circle, but it was kind of a long shot that he’d say yes since he didn’t know anyone too well. Luckily, Greg accepted the invitation and made the trek to join from Seabrook Island, where he was staying. That night at dinner he made Maggie laugh. At the bar afterward, he intrigued her with his post-grad plans (or as he called it, pipe dream) to buy a boat and sail down the coast, and she sparked his curiosity as they talked about a video they had both seen discussing left- and right-handedness throughout human history (not something that would show up on everyone's algorithm!). The two didn’t stop talking until 10 a.m., walking around the docks of the Charleston harbor all night and even enjoying Starbucks on Maggie’s porch as the sun rose. Maggie couldn’t help but feel that night was everything she had ever dreamed of when she thought of finding her perfect match, and Greg couldn't help but feel it was truly meant to be, falling quickly in love when he hadn't even planned to be in town. The rest is history!
Greg recreated their first date, but in reverse! Their first date consisted of dinner at Wild Olive (which is when Maggie discovered her favorite dish of all time- ricotta gnocchi) followed by moonlit dancing to classic songs on the pier at Melton Peter Demetre Park on James Island. Cue Unforgettable by Ella Fitzgerald. Fast forward five years. Greg suggested they go on a date the night before flying out to Illinois to camp with Maggie’s family, a Vickrey family tradition every Memorial Day Weekend. He claimed he needed to pick up something from his office on the way to dinner so he could pack it for the trip, and that he heard the cast of the hit Netflix show OBX (a favorite of Maggie's) was filming on his campus that evening. With no film production in sight when they pulled up, Greg quickly grabbed his "backpack" (aka the ring he had been keeping locked at his desk) and suggested they head to Melton Peter Demetre Park, conveniently located next to his office, to see if the cast was filming over there. When they arrived they walked out by the water and Greg got down on one knee. He said the sweetest words (we’re not sure exactly which words because we both blacked out haha) then Maggie said YES (more like sobbed and nodded)! They soaked up the moment with the beautiful sunset and Charleston skyline behind them, then completed the night with dinner at Wild Olive, calling their friends and family to share the exciting news in between sips of champagne and bites of the best tiramisu the world has to offer. They spent the holiday weekend celebrating with loved ones in Illinois!
