It all started with a beer... Seven years ago, I went to a bonfire with my girlfriend, expecting to enjoy the fire and some cold beers. That's when I noticed a guy that I had never seen at any other party. We ended up spending the evening meowing, laughing, and sharing a few beers... Derek would correct that to stealing all of his beer. We exchanged numbers, but it never went any farther than that. Although love didn’t happen that night, it was the beginning of it all. A few months later, Derek and I had our first date. The conversation flowed so easily and we hit it off more than I ever expected. We continued to hang out- whether it be sushi dates, mini golf, or brewery hopping- on and off for months at a time, over the course of a couple years. I was young and not ready for anything serious, but little did I know, he had bigger plans for us. Finally, I realized that I was ready for something more, but before I could tell Derek, he told me we should just be friends. I had missed my chance (or so I thought)! But that’s exactly what we did... for an entire year, we hung out often and our bond grew closer. Honestly, that year was the best thing that could have ever happened to us. We got to know each other on a deeper level, and I began to realize that Derek really was the one for me. He was adorably shy and extremely kind. He constantly made me laugh. He was always his true self with me, and I was with him. Thankfully, he caved in and ended the torture... He confessed his true feelings for me. It didn’t take long for us to fall in love and decide to spend the rest of our lives together. No matter what we did, we always had fun together. Our adventures ranged from traveling, tubing and hiking, amusement parks, and watching every Marvel movie together. Eventually, we moved in together, got a puppy, and soon to follow was a gorgeous ring...
Some time into our relationship Rachel knew I was going to propose. I loved everything about her and couldn't imagine any more of my life without her by my side. I had to put a ring on it! I knew that I wanted to blow her away with the proposal, so I had to make sure that she didn't see it coming. There were times where we were standing before a beautiful view at the top of a trail, when I wanted to propose then and there... Except I didn't have the ring yet. I knew I had to propose with a view as beautiful as her and she had to be absolutely floored and surprised. I decided I was going to propose to her at the top of Annapolis Rock on the Appalachian Trail. I couldn't just hike the trail with her though or she would see the proposal coming from a mile away, which coincidentally is exactly how long the hike was. I enlisted the help of Olivia to trick Rachel into thinking that her and her friends were going for a hike up the mountain to get some pictures for work. At this point Rachel believed she was going for a fun day hiking with her girls and our dog, Nala. She was so misled. I told her I had to work on-site, so I left the house in the morning, but I was really over at my brother's house waiting. I left for the mountain and arrived before them. I hiked with a backpack full of champagne and flutes, staying off the trail, waiting for her to show up. I got a few weird looks while I hid behind a tree but, I knew it was going to be worth it. Finally, they arrived at the top and Nala almost gave me away but, Rachel didn't see me coming. I walked right up to her, took her hand, and we walked right to the cliff. Rachel was at a serious loss for words. She responded with, “Aren’t you supposed to be at work?” and “This is not real! You’re not really here!” What was happening started to sink in. That is when I got down on one knee and said the four most important words. “Will you marry me?” You are reading this so you know her answer... and I could not be happier!
