The region around San Miguel has another delicious dimension: one of the world’s newest destinations for viniculture. La Ruta del Vino (The Wine Route) is in the Bajío area, the mostly rural center of Mexico, known for year-round spring-like weather and backdrops of evergreens, cacti, farms and haciendas. We enjoyed a beautiful afternoon splitting bottles Tempranillo and Chenin Blanc with brick oven pizza at Dos Búhos!
San Miguel's 88-hectare botanical garden is also a wildlife and bird sanctuary. Pathways head through wetlands and magnificent areas of cacti and native plants with gorgeous canyon and town views. The garden is a mile northeast of town. You can uber, taxi, or walk there (mostly uphill!).
Enjoy the desert landscape that surrounds San Miguel de Allende on horseback. Rancho Xotolar is a family operated “working ranch” that has been in the Morin Ruiz family for over four generations. They are located only a short distance from San Miguel de Allende on the high plateau overlooking the city among natural surroundings and breathtaking views.
Escondido Place: Tucked away in a serene valley, Escondido Place offers a tranquil setting for a rejuvenating hot spring retreat. The pools here range in temperature, allowing visitors to choose their preferred level of warmth. Surrounded by lush gardens and towering trees, Escondido Place exudes an aura of serenity that will leave you feeling completely revitalized. La Gruta: Famous for its cave-like setting, La Gruta provides an otherworldly experience that is truly unforgettable. As you venture into the cave, you’ll be met with a large pool fed by a natural waterfall. The combination of the warm waters and the unique ambiance creates a sense of magic and enchantment.
