A girl from New Hampshire and a boy from Virginia walk into a bar (or a wine tasting)... the rest was history. Diane aka Elizabeth aka Dewy and I met in Richmond on a blind date at a wine tasting (shocker) set up by our mutual friend, Elizabeth’s former study abroad roommate, Ocelia. Elizabeth’s expectations were low. She was unsure if we would have anything in common. Regardless, we both went in with open minds and a bit of nerves. Besides, if it didn’t work out, at least there was wine! I still vividly remember the first time I saw Elizabeth in person. She has a sort of glow that follows her around (which may be from the glitter). I found myself thrown off guard. This was apparent when my first move to woo her was introducing myself by offering my hand in an awkward shake. There was something about her; even in that moment I knew a hand shake wasn’t right. I said, “Let’s try that again,” and I hugged her. That felt much more natural. We proceeded to spend the next 3 hours chatting about anything and everything. It was as if none of the other 100 people were in the room. This excitement for each other continued into the next few days while she was visiting Richmond and continued when she went back to NH despite our physical distance. We found we had so much in common, much that we agreed on, and plenty that we disagreed on as well. Most importantly, we very quickly learned that we were both willing to talk through all of those items with love and understanding. We never stopped sharing our thoughts and feelings from that moment on, and I can’t wait to continue that forever.
