Located in the center of San Miguel de Allende, El Jardín (The Garden) is the heart of the town. El Jardín is nestled at the base of the Parroquia, San Miguel's iconic neo-Gothic, 17th-century church is best known for its soaring pink spires & lofty, ornate sanctuary. This iconic town square is worth taking a stroll through to take in the live music, beautiful landscape and vibrant culture. It won't be hard to find, as much of the town revolves around this central location.
For some of the best handicrafts, textiles, and jewelry in town, visit the Mercado de Artesanías. The market is open from 9 am to 7 pm daily, although we've found the market takes a while to really wake up and shuts down a little earlier than the official closing time. This is the best place to buy your typical handicrafts and souvenirs, and is jam packed with stalls for you to explore.
We highly recommend a visit here for any and all art lovers. What used to be a textile factory today houses canvases, sculptures and artisan products of many great artists who live in San Miguel. There is a seemingly endless maze of galleries to wander through. The galleries are less than a 20 minute walk from la Parroquia, and you will encounter numerous other small artisan shops along the way there.
When visiting San Miguel de Allende, Mexico there’s no more unique and memorable experience than a private tour of La Casa Dragones for a tasting of their new tequila. Make reservations to visit their 6-seat tasting room.
Known for great mezcal and great food, La Mezcalería is a very popular stop in San Miguel. You can get flights of several different types of mezcal if you want to try several types, or the spicy margarita is a fan favorite. They also have a food menu if you're looking for a bite to eat. The bar is a mix of modern and Mexican chic, and is right off the main town square.
On the rooftop of the Rosewood San Miguel, the Luna Rooftop Tapas Bar is on every "Best of" list for San Miguel. Enjoy excellent dishes with exceptional views of the city from this restaurant. We highly recommend coming here for a sunset, the views are unbeatable as you overlook the city with a tangerine sky.
The most popular place for churros and chocolate in San Miguel. If you have a sweet tooth, or even if you don't, a stop here is worth braving the crowds to try the freshly baked churros and steaming dipping chocolate.
Horseback riding is a popular activity in San Miguel (although you won't catch Rob on one, he HATES horses and was barely convinced of the tequila donkey in the wedding march), with numerous different tours offered. We've linked one option here, but a quick Google search will show there are numerous options.
See San Miguel from a different vantage point - the air! Hot air balloon rides are offered daily over the town, and we have linked Globo San Miguel, which has been in service for more than 25 years in San Miguel and 40 years internationally.
Open to the public less than 10 years ago, San Miguel de Allende's Cañada de la Virgen is one of the best-kept archaeological secrets of Mexico. Less than an hour drive from the city center, if you are looking for a day out of town we recommend checking this ancient pyramid.
