One of Shawn’s oldest friends, the two have known each other for over 30 years. They met in middle school in their hometown of Norman, Oklahoma, and quickly bonded over shared interests in music, working out, and causing trouble. Despite living—at times—very far apart, they’ve managed to maintain their friendship through the years. Life has thrown them both more than a few curveballs, and they’ve been there for each other through it all. These days, they still talk almost weekly, usually about coffee, metal music, and MMA, with the occasional discussion of whatever injury one of them happens to be nursing. Liza and Mariana met in August 2014 in Florida. What started as friend became lab mate and then unofficial big sister during their PhD at the University of Florida. They survived the roller coaster of grad school, and in the middle of hurricanes, endless heat, and never‑ending data, their friendship became unbreakable. In the 2020 pandemic, while Mariana was writing her dissertation and spending more time with her computer than with people, Liza showed up with the true “holy trinity” of grad school: milk, ice cream, and wine. More different than water and oil yet somehow inseparable, they’ve kept their bond growing with messages, calls, visits, and gossip. Today Liza is right where she belongs: by Mariana’s side, celebrating this beautiful day from the front row. Liza y Mariana se conocieron en agosto de 2014 en Florida. Lo que empezó como amiga siguió como compañera y terminó en hermana mayor no oficial durante el PhD en la Universidad de Florida. Juntas sobrevivieron al doctorado y, entre huracanes, calor eterno y datos sin fin, su amistad se hizo a prueba de todo. En la pandemia de 2020, mientras Mariana escribía la tesis más acompañada por su compu que por personas, Liza apareció con la verdadera “tríada sagrada” del doctorado: leche, helado y vino. Pippa is a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel who provides unwavering emotional support to Mariana, even though, in truth, Mariana is her emotional support human. She is as sassy as she is adorable—a true cutie patootie and velcro dog—who loves sleeping, munching on Greenies, and, more than anything, being with Shawn and Mariana whenever and wherever they go. She has supervised every step of their life together—from late-night writing and early-morning chores to long walks and road trips—and it only feels right that she is here as their pet of honor to keep everyone on schedule, greet guests, provide much-needed comic relief, and remind them not to take themselves too seriously. Pippa es una Cavalier King Charles Spaniel que le brinda un apoyo emocional incondicional a Mariana, aunque en realidad Mariana es su humana de apoyo emocional. Es tan descarada como adorable: una verdadera cosita hermosa y perrita “velcro” que ama dormir, masticar sus Greenies y, sobre todo, estar con Shawn y Mariana donde sea y cuando sea. Ha acompañado cada paso de sus vidas juntos, desde noches de escritura y quehaceres al amanecer hasta largas caminatas y viajes por carretera, y por eso tiene todo el sentido que hoy esté aquí como su mascota de honor: para ayudarles a mantenerse en horario, recibir a los invitados, aportar el toque de humor que siempre hace falta y recordarles que no deben tomarse la vida demasiado en serio.

Alejandra and Mariana met in Florida and clicked instantly. Since then, Aleja has been that safe hug Mariana can always return to. Aleja has a gift: she brings calm. She knows how to listen even when no one is speaking and has always been able to read Mariana like an open book, because true friends read your eyes; they don’t need words. She has been there on bright days and gray ones, reminding her that life is short but beautiful, and that the sun always comes out in the end. Through long talks, shared silences, tears, laughter, and those hugs that put everything back in place, Aleja became more than a friend: she became chosen family. Today she is here with Mariana to celebrate this new love story from the place that is rightfully hers: right by her side. Alejandra y Mariana se conocieron en Florida y desde entonces, Aleja ha sido ese abrazo seguro al que siempre se puede volver. Aleja tiene un don: transmite calma. Sabe escuchar aun cuando nadie habla y siempre supo leer a Mariana como un libro abierto, porque las amigas de verdad leen los ojos, no necesitan palabras.
