Cortney and Shane crossed paths in the city of San Diego, California, on February 12, 2021. Shane had recently been stationed in National City with the Navy in October 2020, while Cortney had relocated to Pacific Beach in January 2021, without a particular reason other than her desire for a change. Cortney found herself in a unique situation when her newfound friend, Bettina, invited her to be the Bachelorette at her 70's Singles Valentine's Day Dating Game Show Party. Given her newness to the area, Cortney accepted the offer. Bettina also approached Shane, asking him to take on the role of the Bachelor, but he hesitated due to uncertainty about a potential 24-hour shift on the day of the party. The night before the event, Cortney visited Bettina's residence to assist in setting up and painting the stage. As she painted away, immersed in 2000's hip hop, sipping a margarita, Shane approached her, accompanied by his brother, Skye Beau. Throughout the evening, they all hung out and made preparations for the upcoming party. Cortney even lent her hand to help Shane create his 70's themed costume. As the night concluded and Cortney prepared to leave, Shane offered to escort her to her car and assist with her bags. At that moment she knew Shane was interested in her. On the night of the party, Cortney arrived fashionably late, having undergone a hair and makeup session, and it was Shane who caught the first glimpse of her. He guided her to a room where she had to remain hidden from view until her grand entrance on the stage. Following the show, Cortney swiftly made her way to Shane with a bottle of Patron in hand, forgetting about the guy she had picked. From that point on, they spent the entire night together, engaged in conversation, dancing, and eventually exchanging phone numbers. Fast forward to a month later, on March 12th, after numerous dates and spending quality time together, they decided to make their relationship official. Four months down the line, on July 12th, they took the significant step of moving into their first apartment together. Ten months into their journey together, Shane chose a special moment to propose, on his mother's property, atop the hill overlooking Mono Lake. Their love story continued to unfold from there.
