Sara was excited for a class that would bring her to CA to learn about forests – she didn’t know it at the time, but this class would significantly alter the direction of her education, career, and personal life. Coincidentally, this was the same class that Tucker took five years previously and it was a pivotal point for him as well, leading him down the path that took him to Utah to study ecology. We met during this field course in 2014; Sara thought the teaching assistant was the most attractive instructor she ever had, and Tucker was similarly taken with the giggly, bright, and diligent undergrad from USU. By day, Tucker helped teach Sara and the other students about trees, and by night, we camped in Yosemite Valley where Sara admired Tucker's guitar playing around the campfire. It wasn’t hard for Tucker to convince Sara to apply for a position in the lab, and their advisor could see that Sara was quite a catch (for the lab and for Tucker!). We spent the next year analyzing data and working on research together; Tucker helped Sara build skills that would help her flourish in graduate school, and Sara intrigued Tucker with her sharp and creative mind. By the summer of 2015, things had changed. We found ourselves sitting around the campfire a little more closely, we taught the next cohort of students together, we cooked massive group meals together, and we shared in the joys and challenges of field work. The sparks that had been smoldering for the past year began to glow, and all it took was a little Yosemite magic to light the fire. By the end of that summer, we were in love. ––––– Our love has grown over the past 5 years of working together in the lab and field. We have gone from working together on research and teaching to gardening, house projects, exploring the outdoors, seeing live music, and game nights with friends. Five years have flown by; we still work three feet from each other, and we still love every second of it.
