Walking the Mall is one of our favorite activities in DC - it never gets old! The Washington, Lincoln, Jefferson, WWII, Vietnam War, Korean War, and MLK Jr. memorials and monuments are a wonderful way to get your steps in, or you can rent electric scooters or bicycles at multiple stations nearby.
DC's newest development brings restaurants, new shops, and beautiful waterfront views together in one place. A perfect spot to stroll in the sun popping in and out of shops and bars - don't miss the "Shop Made in DC" store featuring art and gifts by local artisans.
Another favorite way to spend an afternoon - learn about the history of aviation and spaceflight and check out the Hubble Space Telescope and the Ryan NYP Spirit, just a few of the objects on display.
Don't miss the "America’s Presidents" gallery, though unfortunately, the portraits of President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama are currently on tour. Another favorite is "The Four Justices" featuring Justices Sandra Day O’Connor, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Sonia Sotomayor, and Elena Kagan.
The Eastern Market is a public market in the Capitol Hill neighborhood featuring food stalls, a farmers market, and arts and crafts being sold by local artisans. A great place to walk around and explore on Saturday and Sunday mornings!
If you're looking for a little exercise, stop by the Key Bridge Boathouse in Georgetown and rent a kayak by the hour to tour DC from the Potomac. You can also rent kayaks in Navy Yard or at The Wharf.
One of our favorite parks in the city, this is a great spot to stroll around with a cup of coffee or bring a picnic and lay on the grass. On Sundays don't miss the drum circle with local musicians and dancing that lasts all day! This is our makeshift front yard and we spend many mornings and afternoons here with our dog, Bill.
This "living memorial" is a pedestrians-only island filled with miles of walking trails - a great way to get outside and into nature while staying close to the city. You can take an Uber to the parking lot of Teddy Roosevelt Island or take the Metro to the Rossyln stop and it's a short walk from there.
Another great way to get outside while still in the city, the National Arboretum is packed with trails, gardens, and unique collections. The National Bonsai & Penjing Museum is especially fun to walk through!
The Old Ebbitt Grill is Washington's oldest saloon and a classic spot for appetizers or dinner. Don't miss the raw bar happy hour every day from 3-5 PM and from 10 PM-12 AM Sunday-Thurs and 11 PM-1 AM Friday and Saturday.
Order the carbonara pizza and you will not be disappointed! This spot specializes in brick-oven pizza, Italian street snacks, and amaro spritzes and is the sister restaurant the more upscale Lupo Verde located a few doors down. You won't go wrong with either!
