On May 29th, 2025, Della and Ross will celebrate their 10-year dating anniversary. You might be thinking “10 years, that’s a lot of time." And you're right, but to that we say, hey, we’ve had other things going on! Back in November 2014, when we first met, it was nearing the end of a year that had been quite significant for both of us. In spring 2014, Ross had been convinced to move from Chicago to Los Angeles to live with his best friend from ASU, Patrick (Now his best man!) Meanwhile, Della finished her Master’s Degree over the summer at the University of Sussex in Brighton, England and fulfilled her dream of moving to LA in October 2014. Her first apartment was in the valley, living with a group of girlfriends from ASU - Meghan, Holly and Allison. Della knew Patrick from taking film classes together at ASU, and that November he invited her over for a Tuesday Night writing group he hosted in LA with a number of other ASU grads. When Della arrived that Tuesday evening, she sat down on the couch next to none other than…you guessed it, Ross. And the rest is history. Just kidding, no it’s not. That night, Della learned of an upcoming holiday party that the boys were hosting, which was Sadie Hawkins themed. (If you’re unfamiliar, that means the girls traditionally ask the guys to the dance, instead of the other way around.) Della asked Ross who he was going with, and when he said nobody had asked him yet, Della seized her chance and asked if he’d go with her. Ross agreed - obviously - and a good time was had by all, at a very fun party that most of us mostly remember. But Della wasn’t sure she wanted to date…not just Ross, but anybody! She had just moved to the city, and wasn’t convinced she wanted to start something so soon. And so, Della initially dodged Ross’s advances - forgive her, she was young and didn’t know any better! But Ross was singularly focused - he knew what Della did not yet know: that they would be great together. Finally, in the spring of 2015, they went on the best first date either of them had ever been on, and by the end of May 2015, everything fell into place…more on that below! Since then, we’ve done so much…we’ve gotten new jobs, moved to new homes, made new friends, gained new family members, traveled the world, adopted the world's cutest cat (Kiki!), and finally, in 2023, we moved in together - for the first time! - to our dream neighborhood of Los Feliz. We are surrounded by the most supportive family and friends in the world. You should know - you’re one of them. Thank you for being a part of this adventure with us, and we’re excited to celebrate with you! Now let's party!
The date: May 28th, 2015. The scene: Ross's apartment. The situation: Hunger had struck. The solution? Our favorite Chinese restaurant, Mandarette. Located literally around the corner from Ross's first apartment, we're pretty sure we paid for their remodel based on how often we ate there. So naturally, we walked over, picked up our food, and walked back. Mistake #1: We didn't check the food at pick-up. Upon arriving back to the kitchen, we realized there were cashews on Della's entree. Since she's allergic to tree nuts, Ross stepped outside to call the restaurant and explain. But! Mistake #2: The window to the balcony is left open, allowing Della to hear the following: Ross: “Hi, my, um, my, uhhhhhhh...my GIRLFRIEND and I just picked up an order, but her meal has cashews on it and she is allergic to nuts, can I come back and pick up a new order?” Girlfriend? Girl...friend? Well, that conversation sure hadn’t happened yet! Ever coy, Della said nothing, sitting on this information for 24 hours. Which brings us to: May 29th, the following night. The situation: Once again, hunger had struck. The solution: This time, we were out to get burritos at Benito’s on Beverly Boulevard. In the middle of a lull in conversation, Della casually dropped this line at the table: Della: “So, word on the street is that I’m your girlfriend… at least, that’s what the lady at the Chinese restaurant said." Ross: [dumbstruck incoherent yammering] Della: [laughs] Ross: Well, I was just trying to be quick to explain the situation, but...would you want to call yourself my girlfriend? Because I would like to call you my girlfriend." Della: "Yeah, I'd like that, too." And from THERE, the rest is history.
On October 13th, 2022, we left Los Angeles. On October 29th, 2023, we returned. In between, we went on the best adventure of our lives. It began with a road trip: across the country, from LA to Florida. We stopped in Phoenix to see Della's family for a few weeks, then went on to El Paso, Austin, and Dallas, spent Halloween in New Orleans, and finally ended up in Palm Coast, Florida with Ross's parents. A few weeks later, on November 21st, 2022, we flew with Ross's parents, sister, and sister's husband Bart to Munich, Germany, to kick off our adventure. Over the next 307 days, we visited 19 countries: Germany, England, Iceland, Spain, Portugal, Morocco, Egypt, Turkey, Ireland, Scotland, the Netherlands, Denmark, Croatia, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Cyprus, Italy, and France. We didn't work. We did a lot of reading. We walked 10,000 steps a day. We met up with dozens of friends in cities across the continent. We spent nearly 100% of our time with each other for almost 11 months. And it was the best year of our lives. We'll rattle through some frequently asked questions: Which city was your favorite? - Tie between Madrid and Berlin, as far as cities we could see ourselves living in. Most stunning scenery was probably Dubrovnik, Croatia or the Amalfi Coast in Italy. Where was your least favorite? - Egypt was...tough. We have some good stories if you can pull us away from the dance floor for more than 30 seconds. Great falafels, though! What was the best food you ate? We ate skin-on suckling pork at Casa Botín in Madrid - founded in 1725, it is the oldest continually operating restaurant in the world according to the Guinness Book of Records! In Dubrovnik, Croatia, the best man at the wedding, Patrick, organized an excursion to a local farm at the top of a mountain to try peka, a traditional Croatian dish of meat or seafood slowly cooked with vegetables in a bell-shaped baking vessel. The word peka means "bell" in Croatian. It's going to sound crazy, but we had some of the best Chinese food of the trip in Amsterdam at China Sichuan. They do not skimp on spice! The best fish and chips of the trip were found in Howth, Ireland, just north of Dublin, at Beshoffs Sea Grill. They were so good that we had to go back...six months after our first visit. The pizza in Italy is somehow even better than you expect. We lost count of the number of pizzas we ate. We also had a Florentine steak that looked like it weighed 20lbs - we shared it between four people and it was almost too much!
