While browsing OkCupid, Sam saw a picture of Jeremy dressed as Marty McFly from "Back to the Future" for Halloween. She didn’t even need to read the rest of his profile before messaging him to say she was Jennifer Parker, the movie character’s girlfriend/wife, for Halloween! Sam and Jeremy are both huge fans of the movie series. Jeremy's license plate in California, Twitter handle and gamertag all pay homage to the films, and Sam had recently celebrated "Back to the Future" day a few months earlier (October 21, 2015, the day to which Marty travels in "Back to the Future Part II"). Sam and Jeremy quickly bonded over the topic, and the rest is well, history. Now they have a Back to the Future wall in their home and will feature references to the movie throughout the weekend.

As the two-year anniversary of their first date approached, Jeremy and Sam planned to get engaged and designed a ring together with stones inherited from their grandparents and parents. It was Jeremy’s job to pick up the ring and surprise Sam, but he accidentally forwarded her an email with his plan to propose on their anniversary. Now that Sam was aware of the plan, Jeremy knew that the only way to surprise her would be to instead propose a few days earlier. On the morning of April 13, 2018, Sam had crew practice on the Charles River. Jeremy headed to the Harvard boathouse and met her on the dock at the end of practice with the ring. Sam, soaked in dirty water and exhausted from the sunrise practice, didn't immediately realize why Jeremy was there until he got down on one knee. Jeremy's 7:15am proposal on a weekday was the perfect surprise, and it made it very hard to focus at work for the rest of the day. (Oh, and she of course said YES!) The wedding vows will be exchanged exactly one year after the proposal.
