The Million Dollar Highway is an iconic highway built in the late 1880s as part of the San Juan Skyway. It is known as one the most spectacular scenic drives in the nation, beginning at Durango and traveling through Silverton and Ouray before ending in Ridgeway. This roughly 25-mile stretch climbs up three towering mountain passes, Red Mountain Pass, Coal Bank Pass, and Molas Pass, as well as several gorges and various valleys.
Ice Lakes Basin: The Silverton area boasts a number of great day hikes, but none can compete with the sheer scenic beauty of Ice Lake. Said to be one of the most beautiful alpine lakes in the state, this strenuous hike will get your legs burning with over 2,400ft elevation gain in 3.5 miles. The views are sure to be worth it! Handies Peak: Colorado has 58 mountain peaks exceeding 14,000 feet (known as "fourteeners" or "14ers" locally) — the most of any state. While Handies is considered one of the *easiest* of the 14ers to climb, hikers beware as you gain almost 2,500ft in 2.7 miles! **Please don't plan these hikes on either of the event days. We only recommend to very experienced Colorado hikers.
