Grace grew up visiting this lake every summer, paddling around in kayaks, watching the 4th of July fireworks, and even competing in her first triathlon with her family. Christopher and Grace never pass through the area without stopping at Lake Siskiyou to take a walk around the shore. We reccomend doing all or some of the walk around the lake and bringing along a picnic lunch to enjoy for a fun half day activity. If the weather if warm, rent a kayak and explore the various parts of the lake to take in the beautiful view of the mountain from new angles. Or just grab some local cold beverages and head down to the beach for some relaxing in the sun with friends.
Castle Lake is located about 10 miles outside of town, above Lake Siskiyou. It provides a beautiful drive up the hill and is usually less crowded than Lake Siskiyou. This is a great spot to go fishing, enjoy a picnic and a refreshing dip into the alpine waters. If you are feeling a bit more ambitious, hike up to Heart Lake from the parking area. It is a short steep hike that gets up above Castle Lake and provides a stunning view of Mount Shasta and the surrounding area, the climb is well worth it!
One of the best hikes in the area. It is a bit more strenuous than most of the other hikes listed, but it is well worth the effort. Pack a picnic lunch and hike about 5.2 miles to Castle Dome and you will be treated with stunning views the entire way. This is a great full day activity and is one of Grace's favorites hikes in the area. Make sure you bring plenty of food and water as it is quite the climb.
Grab a bite to eat and a cold beer at any of the local restaurants, Bistro 107 and Pipeline are 2 of our favorites. Be sure to go into a least one crystal shop to get the full Mount Shasta experience as well, we never miss a chance to go into Soul Connections.
Drive north of Mount Shasta to explore some spectacular lava tubes. This adventure can be a long or as short as you want it to be as it is up to you how deep into the cave you go, but be sure to dress warm and bring a headland. This is definitley one of the more unique experiences the area has to offer.
Held every Memorial Day weekend, the mushroom festival celebrates the proliferation of wild mushroom hunting that occurs every spring in and around McCloud. With nearly 70 artisan, craft, and food vendors, McCloud draws around 8,000 people for this two-day event. During this festival, you can enjoy mushroom workshops, mushroom foraging with the “king of mushrooms” Todd Spanier, and music from local and well-known bands.
