Things To Do

Small island with ALOT to offer. Here are some suggestions.

Bahía Bioluminiscente (Bioluminicent Bay)

Vieques, 00765, Puerto Rico

The Puerto Mosquito Bioluminescent Bay, or Mosquito Bio Bay, is famous for its bioluminescence produced by the dinoflagellate Pyrodinium bahamense, which glows blue when agitated. Puerto Rico has 2 other bioluminescent bays located in Laguna Grande in Fajardo, and La Parguera in Lajas, but the one in Vieques was recognized in 2006 by Guinness World Records as the brightest bioluminescent bay in the world. The bay's mesmerizing brightness is due to the large concentration of dinoflagellates – a quantity that was inexplicably doubled after Hurricane María – ranging from an average of 1,000,000 to 2,100,000 per gallon of water. The lack of light pollution surrounding the Natural Reserve of Mosquito Bay and the mangrove swamps that feed the plankton make this natural spectacle one of Puerto Rico's true wonders.

Make sure to note what time they close the gate at the entrance. Trust us you don't want to get stuck in the refuge. The gate is automatic and on a timer, it takes a person 3-4hrs to respond and open the gate. La Chiva: One of our favorite beaches, nice tones of blue with shade or not. Shallow for a mile, great for snorkeling. Tip: park on #8-12 for the best beach access. Pata Prieta: We love this beach... the access is a little tough (downhill and rocky), also the best part of the beach is on the other side of the access so you have to walk a little. Funny story: we went to this beach on our first "date" and Daniel told me he didn't know how to swim... so I brought him a floaty! Caracas: White sand, different tones of blue water and mostly transparent. Caracas has ample space, but not a lot of shade, make sure to bring your umbrellas, hats and plenty of sun protection!

Yoga Classes

Yoga Classes

Vieques, 00765, Puerto Rico

If you have days before or after the wedding to fill up with an activity, I recommend checking out a yoga class. I don't do yoga myself, but I've been attending their "Boot Camp". This would be a good way to start or end your day. Collette is a seasoned yoga teacher and also an event planner (wink, wink), definitely check out her website and book your yoga class. Vieques Wellness & Yoga offers weekly yoga classes and weekly fitness classes in Vieques, Puerto Rico. All classes are located outdoors in beautiful locations across the island. Choose from sunrise and sunset hatha yoga, vinyasa flow, yin yoga, yoga nidra, restorative yoga, pranayama, sound healing sessions and group fitness classes.
