Long trek for just a wedding? We encourage you to make this a vacation and see all that the island has to offer, however we understand if you will not be able to join us. -Laura and Daniel
I decided moving to Vieques was the right move for me at the time since the pandemic was in full swing in the states and I had gotten laid off ("only until the pandemic is done... then I can move back the states and proceed with my plans"). After a 4 month sabbatical... I decided it was time to start working again and I had my eyes set on El Quenepo. They needed a back server and I was tired of the management world anyway... so why not? I was the "worst" server/food runner and Daniel was the sous chef... needless to say that it wasn't love at first sight. Daniel was the down to business, intimidating, cook. The kind where you would go out of your way not to piss off and I was the new, nice, shy server. I would go to work and then go home; on my days off I would hang out with my parents and their friends. I had been working there a couple of months when one night I get a text message after work from a random Florida number that read "Hey, how are you?". I said "Who is this?" and waited 5 seconds before blocking that number (late to find out that it was Daniel). Fast forward a couple of weeks later Daniel and his buddies are at a local watering hole when Sam, El Quenepo's lead server and Daniels best friend, texted me (without Daniel knowing) and said there was a bunch of El Quenepo people at Lazy Jack's if I wanted to come by. I was home cozy in pj's, but decided I needed to socialize with them in order to make friends here. I showed up in my yellow dress (still as important today as it was then) to a crowd that I don't know (not many El Quenepo people after all) and that's where it all started... That's where the friendship and "UBER" driving started and we learned we are the same person, but different. We are both introverted, but not. We vented about the same things with the same end. We figured out we are end all, be all kind of people. We tried to hide/play it off for a while.... but the questions were all the same... everyone: "are you guys dating?" him/us: "no she is just my UBER driver". It was as if everyone we came to contact with whether it would be friends, Vieques family, coworkers, or even the bartender at our favorite Sunday watering hole seem to know before we did... that we were a match.... So... long story long whether it was the venting sessions, the side looks or hair braids given at work... or maybe even it was catching COVID-19 together (which forced us to quarantine together and ultimately/happily allowed Mama Mendez to pack my stuff up and got it ready to be moved to Daniel's house) that was our beginning. That's it... that's how it started.... That's our origin story and we are sticking to it.
