If you choose to drive, from the Washington, D.C./Maryland area, the drive typically takes about 8 to 8½ hours, depending on traffic and stops along the way. Getting to Clayton, NY (from Portland, Maine) For guests traveling from Portland, Maine, Clayton is about a 7½- to 8-hour drive across New England. The most scenic route takes you west through New Hampshire and Vermont, following Route 302 or I-93 toward I-89, then connecting to I-90 (the New York State Thruway) and I-81 North toward Watertown.
