Travel Note
We celebrated our engagement with a trip to Mérida, Mexico. It's charming, colonial and amongst the oldest continuously inhabited cities in North America. In addition, Mérida is known for being one of the safest cities in Mexico and is close to some of the best beaches. Axel has frequently vacationed in the Yucatán Peninsula and thought it'd be the perfect location for a destination wedding. Maura was initially drawn to the Yucatán after reading a few novels by one of her favorite authors, Silvia Moreno-Garcia. We both recommend reading "Gods of Jade and Sorrow" to provide a perspective on the region's traditions, customs, and history in a more unique way than a traditional guidebook would provide. We also encourage you to explore the region beyond our wedding weekend. Besides, Rob Hossler (Maura’s Dad) suggested somewhere warm so he could fish in the winter.....
Flight
Mérida is approximately 4 miles from the Mérida International Airport. It’s connected to several cities in the United States: Miami, Houston, Dallas-Fort Worth, Atlanta and Orlando. American Airlines and United are the main airlines offering direct flights. Mérida can also be reached via connecting flights. We know some guests are opting to fly into Mexico City from the U.S. and then Mérida.
Flight
Cancún International Airport serves as the primary gateway for the Yucatán Peninsula. Many U.S. cities have direct flights to Cancun, Mexico, including: New York City, Boston, Denver, Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas, Miami, Atlanta, Washington, D.C., and San Francisco, amongst others. Cancún is roughly 193 miles from Mérida, but there are several transportation options to reach Mérida.
Train
The Tren Maya, or Maya Train, connects key destinations in the Yucatán Peninsula, including Cancún and Mérida. The cost of a ticket on the Maya Train varies depending on factors such as class of service and distance traveled. The route between the two cities is about 3.5 hours and cost ~$45 USD per person each way. There is a small snack cart on the train and it has bathrooms. Guide for Taking Tren Maya: 1.) Take an Uber/Taxi to the train station. One important thing to note is that most of the Tren Maya stations are on the outskirts of town and pretty much all require taking a taxi. There is also a free bus shuttle from the Cancún airport to the Cancún Tren Maya station. 2.) Either buy your tickets at the counter or buy them ahead of time. You can purchase tickets ahead of time online, but if you are taking the train last minute you should purchase your tickets at the ticket booth inside the train station. 3.) Put your luggage through security screening. Similar to airport screenings, you'll be required to put all of your backs through an x-ray machine to check for weapons or any other prohibited items. 4.) Show your tickets. After security you will show your tickets to be granted access to enter the area for passengers only. 5.) Board the train from the correct platform. Keep in mind that trains run like clockwork so don't be late! 6.) The train ride from Cancún should be under 4 hours. When you arrive in Mérida, leave the platform to head upstairs and hail a taxi or a cab to your final destination (hotel, etc.). The Mérida train station is not directly downtown.
