The North Carolina Museum of Art is an art museum in Raleigh, North Carolina. Today, it encompasses a collection that spans more than 5,000 years of artistic work from antiquity to the present, an amphitheater for outdoor performances, and a variety of celebrated exhibitions and public programs. The Museum features over 40 galleries as well as more than a dozen major works of art in the nation's largest museum park with 164-acres. It is a wonderful museum and small park to spend a couple hours touring.
The Sarah P. Duke Gardens are one of our favorite spots in Durham. Leah used to come here in between classes at Duke. We also took our engagement photos here. The gardens are a wonderful place to stroll around for an hour. The gardens are divided into four areas, the Historic Core and Terraces, the H.L Blomquist Garden of Native Plants, the William Louis Culberson Asiatic Arboretum and the Doris Duke Center Gardens (including the Page-Rollins White Garden). We recommend you stop by the terrace, koi pond, and the redwood tree. There is a small fee for parking, but the garden is free.
Great place for a hike! More than twenty miles of hiking trails provide access to most of William B. Umstead State Park. Visitors may choose between a short stroll along a nature trail or a more extensive hike into the woods. This is a great spot to see the natural side of North Carolina.
If you have time to drive to Durham we highly recommend you tour Duke's beautiful West Campus and see the stained glass inside the famous Chapel. Duke is well known for it's collegiate gothic architecture. The campus is filled with interesting buildings and some cute places for a bit to eat.
Patrick and I love the Duke Lemur Center! We highly recommend planning a visit if you have time for it. They book up months in advance. If this is something you're interested in we recommend booking at least 2 months in advance. The General Tour is a nice way to spend 75minutes. You will get an overview of the center and see a lot of prosimians. Sadly, there is a no lemur-touching policy. There are also more private tours. You really can't go wrong at the Duke Lemur Center.
