Downtown Leesburg (around King Street and Market Street) offers a wonderful stroll through colonial-era architecture housing today's shops, restaurants, and bars. Some of our favorite places to eat nearby are Anita's New Mexico Style Mexican Food, La Villa Roma Restaurant & Pizzeria, Tuscarora Mill, and Lightfoot Restaurant.
Dodona Manor was home to General George C. Marshall and his wife from 1941 until his death in 1959. The grounds are open for self-guided exterior tours and you can purchase tickets for docent-led interior tours through the Dodona Manor website.
If you wish to pass your time shopping and leisurely strolling outside surrounded by stores on all sides, then Leesburg Premium Outlets is the place for you! Lucy remembers when the land was a massive field. Once the Outlets were built, she and her sister have many fond memories in Claire's in the early 2000s and later working at LOFT and Brooks Brothers outlets.
We love enjoying the view of the mountains and rolling hills of vineyards while sipping Stone Tower's Wild Boar Blanc de Blanc or Estate Fieldstone.
Part of the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum, this outpost near Dulles Airport is home to the Discovery space shuttle, Enola Gay, SR-71 Blackbird, Concorde, and many other exhibits, as well as IMAX and Planetarium shows.
Middleburg is famous for its horse country, wineries, lovely shops and restaurants, and historic sights. The Red Fox Inn & Tavern is one of the longest continually operated inns in the U.S. and the nearly 300-year-old structure made of local fieldstone anchors the downtown.
For Civil War history buffs, Manassas National Battlefield Park is the site of the first and second battles of Bull Run. Additional Civil War historical sites in the area include Ball's Bluff, Oatlands, Red Fox Inn, and the Mosby Heritage Area self-guided historic driving tours.
Where the Shenandoah and Potomac rivers meet, you can explore John Brown's raid against slavery and discover miles of trail in the Blue Ridge and along Civil War battlefields. Walk to The Point for a view of the rivers meeting.
Lucy's favorite hike in the Shenandoah is Old Rag, but this is not an easy hike nor for the faint-hearted! If you choose this adventure, allow for 7-8 hours of hiking and wear grippy-soled hiking boots. There are many other shorter, easier options for hiking. Skyline Drive also makes for a gorgeous drive with pullout viewpoints and paralleling the Shenandoah River.
Washington, D.C., has lots to offer, whether you're looking for cobblestone streets and waterfront views (Georgetown), sports at Capital One Arena (fka Verizon Center) or Nationals Park, or history. The National Mall is the heart of history, with The White House, National Archives, Supreme Court, U.S. Capitol, Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial, National Gallery of Art, Library of Congress, and multiple (free!) Smithsonian Museums. Fun fact: Lucy spent a summer in college interning with the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum on the National Mall. The third floor isn't open to the public, but houses museum curators and planetary scientists. Lucy worked with the planetary scientists mapping avalanches on Mars, but the real highlight was intern access to IMAX and planetarium shows and the flight simulators.
