How We Met

Chemistry at the Pharmacy

Laura and John met at the local pharmacy. John had just moved to California to start his career as a pharmacist and caught Laura's eye. She was enchanted by his warm personality, big smile, memorable hair, and beautiful eyes. After a few months they found themselves alone one evening in the pharmacy with a little time to talk. "Do you know what song is playing?" asked John. After trying and failing to Shazam the the song, they began to talk about a shared interest in music and funny stories from their pasts. Laura asked John out, and the conversations have not stopped since.

Moving In

Animal Instinct

After dating for nearly a year, John had a certain feeling about Laura. They had been spending lots of time together and realized how much they had in common. After months of music, anime, hiking, video games, hot pot, crab boils, Jamaican ackee, and a love for trying new and different things together, they decided to go on a trip to San Diego. They enjoyed time on the beach and a night in the city, and had an amazing day at the San Diego Zoo - Safari Park. John told Laura in the most eloquent fashion that, since they were spending so much time together, it might be 'easier' if they just moved in together. Just a thought. The search for an apartment was a difficult one, especially in a town where an apartment gets listed in the morning and sold by the same afternoon. Eventually they found The Meadows, which suited all of their needs. Laura wanted lots of light, privacy, a view of green, and the sound of water. John liked it because it was about one block from his current apartment. That space has been the setting for Laura and John's most precious moments and allowed their love to truly blossom. Now they are looking to find a new home to make new memories as husband and wife.

Cat Diego... aka. Rembrandt Beauregard ("Remy Beau")

A Cat Has Three Names

Although John had always known that he wanted a cat, Laura needed to warm up to the idea. After growing up with five golden retrievers, Laura was convinced she was a dog person, and that cats we mean and bitey. After months of prodding and pushing, Laura had finally come around to the idea of owning a cat. Not just any cat would do, though. Laura wanted a cat that would be social and not just hide under the bed when company comes over. She wanted a cat that would have personality and give them love, and need love and care from them in return. After consultation with a 'cat personality' matchmaking test (for both of them and their closest loved ones) they were narrowed down to only a few types of cats that would be ideal, and both of them fell in love with ragdolls. They are large fluffy cats, love being held and handled, follow their owners from room to room, and sleep for a majority of the day (just like us). John and Laura found two kittens online and went to go visit their family. They asked if the boy kitten already had a name, and the young son, named Diego, said that the kitten was named was "Cat Diego," because the kitten was a fighter, just like him. Laura and John decided to name him Rembrandt Beauregard, or "Remy Beau" for short, but still use his original moniker when he gets excited or aggressive. It may seem silly to some people, but Remy has truly touched Laura and John's lives and allowed them to see a nurturing side in each other, which has made their love grow stronger than they ever thought possible. Raising him has helped develop their parenting skills (if only a little), and given them a true sense of family; because Remy is part of their family, just as they are about to be part of each other's.

The Proposal

Will It Go Round In Circles

After their first encounter in the pharmacy, Laura and John went on a first date to grab a coffee. They went to The Sycamore Kitchen for brunch, which was Laura's favorite spot for cappuccinos, a short walk from her home, and a couple blocks from where John worked. They quickly realized they had a tremendous amount of interests in common, ranging from a love of Japanese culture, to fond memories of each living in Chicago and shopping in the exact same Japanese supermarket. By the time brunch was over, they realized they did not want to stop talking., so afterward, they went to Amoeba records to look for some vinyl, which was John's favorite spot. They could have gone anywhere because they spent pretty much the entire time talking instead of eating or shopping. The conversations continued into the evening and for many evenings after that. After almost 6 more years, Laura had done everything short of holding up a sign that said "propose to me, stupid!" and John apparently felt like the time was right. With a little research, he figured out the name of the song that was playing in the pharmacy when they first met. He contacted the record store, and requested the song be played on the 18th of January. John took Laura to The Sycamore Kitchen for lunch, and suggested they go to the record store afterwards. Once at the record store, John led Laura to the top floor and excused himself to the restroom. When Laura was called to the information desk on the intercom, she was suspicious. When she heard the Billy Preston song start playing, she knew that her long and patient wait was over, and when she saw John on his knee at the base of the staircase, she knew that she wanted him forever.
