Trevor and Lara met ... you guessed it ... on Tinder. Dating in Silicon Valley is hard. This is how you do it! It was June of 2018. Trevor wore a neon orange shirt to their first date at a Mexican restaurant. They discovered their shared hatred for cilantro and country music. And they discovered there might be something more. Lara suggested something "aggresive" for date #2, which was driving to Santa Cruz to watch the sunset. Afterwards they went to get Ice Cream at Maryanns, where Lara ordered two scoops. Trevor knew she was special. Working opposite schedules (Trevor as a lacrosse coach, Lara in corporate America), it took dedication to make time for each other and time to travel together. As they were starting the preparation to the next step of moving in together, COVID hit. They went from living in separate places with separate schedules to being with each other 24/7 with minimal exposure to the outside world. They grew closer, and that's when they both knew. In June of 2020, Lara had a forced week off of work and needed to get out. They packed up their 2-door Wrangler, grabbed Dunkin (the dog), and went to Utah. They spent 10 days/9 nights exploring the state, camping in different locations every night and driving through trails during the day (the technical term is overlanding). It was the best experience they had both had. It ignighted their desire to have this be a part of their lives. To do this, they needed two things: Trevor to change careers and have weekends available, and to leave California. It was just too expensive. In January of 2021, they packed up their lives and moved to Colorado. They bought a house 2 weeks after moving. And they fell in love with the state. They successfully completed 9 overlanding trips in 2021, and plan to do more in 2022. Lara and Trevor are a bit untraditional. Their mortgage papers read "Lara Dubuc, an unmarried woman". It was obvious they would get engaged. They talked about it. Trevor told Lara when he took money out for the ring. But Lara had NO idea he was going to propose when he did. It was back in Utah. The day after Thanksgiving. Night 4 of sleeping in the car, in the middle of the wilderness (so no showers, no bathrooms, you get it). Their friends had just left to drive back to California. They were on the side of a canyon at sunset, north of Canyonlands National Park. Some indicators to prove Lara had no idea: 1. He tried to propose the weekend before at Rocky Mountain National Park. He asked her to go 3 or 4 times. Lara refused. She wanted to clean the house instead. 2. On the drive to Moab, Lara made a comment about their friends getting engaged. Trevor said "Do you think we'll get engaged this trip?" Lara immediately said "No!". He had a ring in his bag. 3. Trevor, who wears his emotions on his sleeve, spent 4 days with a diamond ring in his backpack, with it being less than 5 feet from Lara just about the entire time. It was perfect. And now, here they are, getting married at the most magical place. And how lucky to be able to celebrate with their closest friends and family!
