How We Met

Kyla came to Columbus to "find a boyfriend".

The way Kyla met Eric is not very sophisticated, or delicate, or respectable. Kyla met Eric at Ace of Cups in Columbus, Ohio. She'd driven an hour north from Athens with her friend Emil. Her mission? To "find a boyfriend". Kyla had just scaled the wall into the bar's back courtyard in order to avoid paying the $5 cover charge (which happened to be there to compensate Eric's band, which was playing that night, sorry Eric), when she decided she could use a cigarette. She bummed one from... you guessed it, Eric. Kyla mostly just talked to Eric that night to be nice. Eric was (and is) 10.5 years younger than Kyla, so both automatically dismissed a romantic partnership. Nonetheless, they enjoyed their chat, and Eric was especially drawn to the fact that A) Kyla had arrived in muck boots, overalls, and a pleather jacket. B) Kyla was very into the REAL things in life. Fresh eggs, farming, unique experiences. Unbeknownst to Eric, he was way more into Kyla than the other way around. Nonetheless, Kyla and Eric exchanged numbers. Kyla remembers asking Eric if his last name was "Moody" as she entered his contact info into her phone. The following week was the weekend of Kyla's birthday (May 19th), and it happened to coincide with the Nelsonville Music Festival. Kyla's dear friend, Sara Barnthouse was visiting all the way from California, and as a birthday gift, insisted they go to the music festival. On their way in, they ran into, you guessed it again, Eric Wagner. Kyla clearly remembers saying to Sara "Oh God, it's that kid again" before he came up and joined them in the beer line. That night, Eric stayed by Kyla's side the whole time, and his sweetness, enthusiasm for life and curiosity made her, well, kinda like him. Eric says that that's the day, May 19th, 2012, that he fell in love with Kyla. So there you have it, love at 2nd sight does exist! Kyla, though touched by his enthusiasm, was not convinced, and at the end of the night, she went home all by her lonesome. The next day she was at a cattle farm, again with Emil, when Eric showed up with his good friend Peter. It turns out, Emil had invited them to swing by the farm where he worked to try some fresh milk. Eric took a photo of Kyla and Emil milking Peaches the Cow. Then Eric and Peter headed home to Columbus. A couple weeks later however.... Kyla went to the retro dancing night at Ace of Cups. She ran into, you guessed it yet again, Eric Wagner. The two danced all night and had a great time. After this, Kyla started spending more time with Eric. She had very mixed feelings about it. On one hand, she liked Eric very much. On the other hand, he was 21, TWENTY ONE, and she was 32. To Eric's torment, she kept him at a distance for a good long while. Eventually, Eric, upon seeing Kyla go on dates (though never more than one with the same person), said he had had enough. He couldn't do it anymore. He cut Kyla off. All of a sudden, this 22 year old was standing up for himself. Kyla took a second take. She was beside herself. She remembers driving off with a gas nozzle still in her car because she was so preoccupied. She wrote a letter to Eric saying that they could give it a go. It was scary, it was wonderful. It was ever after. The end.
