Question

Should I stay in Portland or closer to Kennebunkport?

Answer

Depends on the vibe and what else you're hoping to do and see while you are in Maine! Portland is a fun, small city with tons of amazing restaurants and bars. You can take a ferry from Portland to one of the islands in Casco Bay, grab a lobster roll, walk around Old Port to see the fishing wharfs and go shopping, etc. The welcome party on Friday night will be in Portland too. Kennebunkport also has a great vibe but very different. If you want to be on or closer to the ocean with a quieter, slower pace then this would be the spot. Kennebunk (where the wedding takes place) is the town inland from Kennebunkport, about a 10-15 drive. We would recommend looking for a cute inn or oceanside Airbnb to stay in if you choose Kennebunkport. The beaches are gorgeous and the whole town has a very classic Vacationland feel to it. You would likely also need to rent a car if you stay here.

Question

What's the deal with the wedding venue?

Answer

Jen and Greg Thayer, the parents of the two kiddos I (Claire) nannies, offered up their beautiful 18 acre property as a wedding venue for us! We'll have a tent set up on the lawn where dinner and dancing will take place but there are a lot more activities planned so we can take full advantage of the property. The barn will have some cozy spots to hang out, play games, sip your cocktails, take pictures, and work on your guestbook entry. The tennis court will have tennis and pickleball- come prepared to compete! We will have fires going later in the evening at the firepit down by the pond and we will have some hammocks and camp chairs scattered around for lounging.

Question

What's the deal with camping? I saw it on the schedule and I'm confused...

Answer

Since we have such a non-traditional wedding venue we decided to take full advantage and try to keep the fun going around the clock! We love camping would love to incorporate this pasttime into our special weekend. "Clurt" will be camping on the property and stoking the fire! We would love for you to join the stoke. BYO camping supplies, or reach out to us directly and we can supply the necessities (plus some glamping items) for you. -Please RSVP to camping if you plan to join, so we know how many chicago hot dogs, bagels, and bottles of malort to buy.

Question

What should I wear?

Answer

First, let's talk weather. October in Maine can be really lovely but it's a little difficult to know how the temperature will feel. Obviously we will all be checking the weather app every 15 minutes as the day approaches... or maybe that's just Claire... but it's safe to plan for the temperature to be anywhere in the low 50s (especially at night) to anywhere in the high 70s (let's all collectively pray for this scenario). Now let's discuss function and footwear. This is not a banquet hall wedding. We will be in grass and on gravel so wear the appropriate shoes. Also, there will be games. Also, it could potentially be wet (not if we all pray hard enough). A colorful sneaker, a sturdy but cute flat, a cowboy boot, etc could all be good choices. Games! If you are most excited about the promise of pickleball and badminton then make sure to wear clothes that will allow you to participate. This is up to you - you can absolutely be dressed up while playing pickleball. There will be croquet and bocce and other boujie lawn games that can easily be played in a suit or dress. Most importantly, we want you to love what you're wearing and have fun putting an outfit together. Think Wes Anderson movies, garden parties, and autumnal celebrations. Colorful and comfortable.
