Monarch Grove Butterfly Sanctuary

Monarch Grove Butterfly Sanctuary

1073 Lighthouse Ave, Pacific Grove, CA 93950

"The Monarch butterflies that come to Monterey County are a special generation of butterflies. While most Monarchs live only four to five weeks after they reach adulthood, the generation that overwinters in Monterey County lives up to six months. Even more incredible, scientists still aren't sure how each new migrating generation knows the way to warm weather spots. This stunning display is best viewed at the Pacific Grove's Monarch Grove Butterfly Sanctuary." Map and Directions To find the Monarch Grove Butterfly Sanctuary, take Lighthouse Avenue to Ridge Road, and find parking. The pathway to the Butterfly Sanctuary is tucked away next to the Butterfly Grove Inn's property, and has a white picket fence on one side. The sanctuary is open year-round, but the best time to spot butterflies is from October through February. Admission is free.

Top 10 Day Hikes

Top 10 Day Hikes

Must mentions: For hiking in this area, on everything from easy to difficult trails you are likely to encounter poison oak. The trails listed are well kept and all you need to do in order to avoid it is to not brush up on any bushes. Most all trailheads have photos of the plant so you can identify it. When in doubt, remember "leaves of 3 let it be". Layers are a great idea, and decent shoes always help (for most of the trails on the list, you don't need anything crazy, just athletic shoes that have a bit of grip on the bottom will do.)

Don't Forget the Wine!

Don't Forget the Wine!

It may be 2.5hrs south of Napa, but the wines from the Carmel Valley and Monterey County can rival some of the best! Folktale Winery is amazing and just up the road, for a more varied and casual experience, Winehouse is a great time also!
