Spenser and Kari met like many millennials: online through a dating app. Spenser was quick to ask for an in-person meeting so they could determine if there was real chemistry! Their offices are two blocks from each other, so they met for drinks at a nearby restaurant. The first date lasted 3 hours and was filled with lots of questions like "What's your favorite color?" and "What college basketball team do you root for?" Even though they come from Syracuse and UNC families, they still managed to both want a 2nd date, and many more dates after that!
Spenser enlisted the help of Kari's friend & bridesmaid Cara to help keep the proposal a surprise. Since Cara's mom was in town, she asked Kari to meet them in the gardens of the Carlyle House after their house tour so they could all go to lunch. This was not an unusual activity for any of them to participate in, so Kari was not suspicious. Spenser took the opportunity to "plan a golf day" with the boys, which was also not an unusual activity. When the day arrived, Spenser began to ask suspicious questions about Kari's outfit and travel plans to lunch. However, Kari convinced herself that it was just Spenser being weird and it couldn't mean that she was about to get engaged. When Kari arrived at the Carlyle House, she was genuinely surprised to turn the corner and see Spenser standing under the gazebo at the end of the path. After a long hug, some tears, and a very important question, Kari said yes to forever with Spenser. They were then greeted by most of their immediate family who had traveled to Alexandria to be a part of this special day!
