Since the dawn of time, the universe has been orchestrating the moment Ian and Karen would unite. 1987: The first cosmic efforts to draw them together begins. High School seniors Karen and Ian plotted their futures, each settling on New York University as their school of choice. With simultaneous plans to attend NYU's Tisch School of the Arts, Ian enrolled for theater and Karen for film. Perhaps they strolled together on a campus tour. Perhaps they selected the same dorm. Perhaps Ian made Karen giggle as they sat in the admissions office. The cosmic plan for the creation of Team Ian and Karen was in place. But alas! Karen changed her mind at the last minute and rerouted to the University of Miami. The foretold connection dissolved into thin air, and universe weeped. 1989: The universe tries again. Karen and Ian are at the Grateful Dead show in Buffalo: Karen with friends on their annual sojourn to the Dead summer concert; Ian with friends traveling from New Hampshire. Perhaps they stood next to each other in the beer line. Perhaps they danced Sugar Magnolia next to other. Perhaps Ian winked at Karen in her cute tie-dye skirt. But the connection didn't take, and the universe let out a sigh of despair. 1993: The universe is relentless. Ian, with his high school buddies, takes a year after college to live as ski bums in Summit County, Colorado. Karen's parents also move to Summit County! Ian is teaching ski lessons at Copper Mountain when Karen hits the Copper slopes with her parents. Perhaps they shared a chair lift. Perhaps they brushed hands reaching for the same ski-lodge French fries. Perhaps Ian admired Karen's amazing technique at owning the runs. But alas, the inevitable connection didn't stick. The universe again hung its head in sadness. Quick montage of the next 30 years: Karen and Ian lead interesting lives. They live in cool cities, they build successful careers, they maintain wonderful friendships. But they always know that something is missing. 2024: A new year is dawning and the universe returns to finally make things right. Ian and Karen are each determined to find their soul mate. They prepare themselves for The Dating World. Snappy hair cuts, chic clothes, enhanced work outs. They are ready. The cosmos intervenes to move things along. A sprinkling of star dust compels Karen's friend Emily to secretly create Karen's profile on Hinge. Ian grows frustrated with an unproductive dating app and decided to try Hinge. Valentines Day 2024: Karen receives a notification from Hinge that a boy named "Ian" was her best match. Texting ensued. Ian sends Karen photo of himself skiing, a giant smile on his face. Karen is charmed. They meet up. March 2024: The connection is real and Karen and Ian plan their first trip. Off to Aspen they go, for a memorable 4th date. They ski, they shop bougie, they apre, they fine dine. The World Cup races down the main slope. Shakey Graves plays a free concert. Karen and Ian love each others' company. April 2024: Ian flies with Karen to Florida, her Plus One at Tom's big gay wedding cruise. For four days they dance, cavort, dress for themed parties. Tom's friends share embarrassing stories about Karen; Ian is undeterred. Everyone likes Ian. Karen and Ian have fallen in love. June 2024: Not wasting any time, Karen and Pandora leave their home in Boulder to move in with Ian in Denver. She redecorates everything, merging the detritus and furnishings and memories from two full lives lived in two full houses. Ian never complains about the overhaul. And then it is Karen and Ian's Home. The happy family unit of Ian, Karen and Pandora are where they should be. June 2025: Ian proposes! He plans a surprise proposal, on the beach, in Greece, surrounded by friends and even a videographer. Of course she says Yes. The universe smiles in serene satisfaction.
