Daniel and Karen first crossed paths nearly 15 years ago in middle school, during a shared study hall period. Their ideas about how to spend that time couldn't have been more different: Karen was the ambitious, studious type, buried in homework, while Daniel preferred goofing off and playing games with friends. Sparks flew—but not the romantic kind. In a moment of classic middle-school frustration, choice words were said. No one could know for sure- it was so long ago but it was on the lines of Karen calling Daniel an "annoying idiot" and a future gas station attendant and Daniel firing back that Karen was an "insufferable know-it-all" and forever loser. And so on and so forth (Sharing the same last name only added to the absurdity.) Eye rolls and taunts ensued, their immature rivalry mirrored a young Ron and Hermione than a Jane Austen romance like Mister Darcy and Miss Bennett. When their paths finally diverged, both thought, "Good riddance!" Years later, in the upperclassman days of high school, a mutual friend reintroduced them. Much to Karen's surprise, Daniel had conveniently forgotten their rocky history and quickly developed a full-blown crush. They started as lunchroom buddies with the rest of their high school gang. Despite their differences—Karen's love of fantasy books, arts, and quiet adventures versus Daniel's passion for sci-fi games, guys' nights, and staying cozy at home—something clicked. They grew close in friendship first and found that they both enjoyed one another's company so much that something else was to come of it. Life took them in different directions when Karen left for college and they lost touch—until Karen's mom "happened" to bump into Daniel at the grocery store. With a little maternal matchmaking, she mentioned Karen was single, home for Thanksgiving, and oh-so-casually shared her phone number. Daniel reached out immediately. The spark reignited (far less hostile this time), and on December 7, 2016, they had their first official date—after Daniel asked her to go steady and survived a two-week wait for her yes. Since then, they've cheered each other through incredible growth Polar opposites have become the perfect balance. Early dates meant cozy nights binge-watching shows or wandering bookstores. In recent years, they've embraced bigger adventures together—hiking trails across Virginia and beyond, traveling the country and globe, and tackling weekend projects like hunting down car parts or replacing spark plugs. Karen has pulled Daniel out of his comfort zone into new experiences around the world, while Daniel has brought humor, warmth, and connection into Karen's life, drawing her out of solitude. From headstrong teenagers to the thoughtful, supportive partners they are today, they've shaped each other's best selves—reaching new heights side by side.
Even in the midst of their middle school feud, both Daniel and Karen were on the page of one thing- shutting down any rumors of them being siblings. to their southern friends, a name like O'Brien is unique enough to be weird while in Irish hubs like New York and Chicago its a dime a dozen. They started accusing one another of stealing their name when the teachers called the wrong O'Brien. However as the years passed, both find it really hard not to resist making a joke on people over it- oh well. Their friend did introduce them again in high school over their shared last name and "O'Brienism" so it's not all so bad. Plus- Karen always said she'd keep her last name!
"Karen and I show our love and commitment every day through the simple act of working as a true team. One of my favorite memories is from when we first moved in together and faced our first real challenge as partners: her old Nissan started running rough and needed new spark plugs. Instead of calling a mechanic, we turned it into a weekend adventure—heading to AutoZone together, watching tutorial videos, and learning the process step by step. Things didn’t go perfectly; a bolt stripped and broke off in the valve cover, testing our patience. Rather than giving up, we drove to a local junkyard, hunted down the right part, and kept pushing forward until we had three of the four spark plugs replaced successfully. Even though the last one still gave us trouble, we felt so proud of what we accomplished side by side. That day reminded me that when you find “the one,” your partner becomes so much more than a romantic companion—they become your co-pilot, someone you trust completely, merging your lives, letting go of selfishness, and facing every obstacle together. With teamwork, patience, and determination, we come out of every challenge braver, stronger, and wiser than before." - Daniel O'Brien
After eight years of dating, sharing two apartments, and both completing college, Daniel knew the time had come to take the next step and ask Karen to spend their lives together in marriage. Family and friends weren’t surprised—most responded with a knowing smile and a cheerful, “It’s about time!” The only questions left were where, when, and how. The answer arrived in the form of a once-in-a-lifetime adventure: with encouragement from Karen’s dad, they planned a bucket-list trip abroad, setting sail for Ireland and France in June of 2024. Daniel instantly recognized this as the perfect moment to propose—romantic, meaningful, and truly unforgettable. The real challenge lay in secretly carrying the engagement ring through airports, borders, and customs without Karen catching on. Once they landed safely in Ireland, the search for the ideal spot began. After wandering through lush parks and breathtaking cliffs, “Operation Whiskey Tango (Wedding Time)”—carefully coordinated by Daniel and Karen’s dad—sprang into action during a hike at the iconic Giant’s Causeway. As the group started voting to wrap up the hike after a few hours, Daniel spotted his chance: he led Karen to a quiet patch of grass, dropped to one knee, and asked her to marry him. With joyful tears and a resounding yes, Karen accepted, sealing their promise forever. From that moment on, the rest of their journey through Ireland and France became a beautiful celebration—overflowing with love, romance, and the quiet certainty that they were stepping into the next chapter of their lives, hand in hand.
"We had one day in Paris and that evening Daniel had arranged for a dinner reservation at this small restaurant called Le Café de Mars. We had a cute little table for two right next to the open patio and watched many Parisians take their overprice poodles for walks. Daniel and I were naive to the French dining experience but we were thankful for a very nice waitress who kept us from embarrassing ourselves by making awkward dinner choices. I don't remember the food itself but it was a nice time. Whenever I travel, I like to go over things that went well, things that didn't, the unexpected, if there was a second time what we'd do differently so I shared that experience with Daniel. One of the other waiters—poor boy couldn't speak a word of English—brought over two glasses of champagne and in the confusion, our waitress explained that word had gotten around the restaurant of our recent engagement and it was a treat from them all. That was super sweet... however, we'd already been working on a bottle of red wine and I am a notorious lightweight and the champagne pushed me over the edge. I asked Daniel since there were a few more hours of daylight left if there was anything else he really wanted to do in the city we'd likely never return to. Daniel mentioned that he really wanted a creme brulee but none was on the menu so it was fine. Drunk me wasn't having it so after paying our bill I decided to shout at the remaining of Parisian society that we were searching high and low for Daniel's creme brulee, etiquette be damned. And etiquette was damned. I am aware of European customs but drunk me isn't—dragging Daniel and yelling at the top of my lungs down cobblestone streets and harassing poor hostesses. When we finally found a place, our waiter looking like he was about to have a xenophobic stroke at us Yankees. But we got it! And plus we were sat next to two Americans from California. Daniel being Daniel of course made friends with them and we scooted our tables together (to our waiter's disgust). We learned the couple was celebrating their 30th wedding anniversary. It was like looking into the window of a future we craze. Daniel had sneezed and the man said bless you—only Americans say bless you and no one loves Americans like other Americans abroad. The best part? The legend of French wine is true. No hangover!" -Karen O'Brien
