Great question! Alaska can be cold by lower 48 standards. Our temps usually fluctuate between 55-65 in the summer. That's great for us, but can be cold for you. We'd suggest wearing layers, and always have a waterproof jacket with a hood! Make sure it's not just water resistant... it can get rainy end of August.
It's always good to carry bear spray with you when you're hiking in Alaska. You can borrow a bear spray, or buy one at sporting goods stores. You cannot carry these back with you on the airplane, so don't even try to lol we can always use bear spray and if we have extras we can definitely loan them out.
To be honest... unlikely. Late August is just getting back to actually starting to get dark at night. I'd google northern lights and check the kp index to see what they are forecasting.
No.... ha ha I had to put this one on, because people always ask it.
Yes... some years are worse than others. The mosquitoes here are basically the state bird and will fly off with small pets, so beware when you are out hiking, always have bug dope on your body at all times and I'm talking about the 99% deet... you know, the stuff that is like putting acid on your skin? Yep, that's the stuff, but you won't get eaten by bugs.
Well the answer is yes... there are fish here always. It depends upon what you want to fish, and what fish are still running at the time you arrive. It fluctuates from year to year, so until August we won't really know what is going to show up. There is always fly fishing that can be done, and just like any other state, you'll have to obtain an out-of-state license.
Approximately 43% of the state is vaccinated as of May 13th, 2021. We are really good at social distancing... I mean we live in Alaska and people think either we are our own country or belong to Canada. COVID is still present here, but we are really good at keeping to ourselves and away from people, that's just how we are. We recreate a lot outside and enjoy alone time. You'll understand once you get here how easy it is to maintain distance between others when you have a huge state to play in!
