How We Met

November 16th, 2018

We first met in 2018 on campus at RIT when Jenna decided to take a visit to the college she had wanted to attend since middle school, which also happened to be the college Trent was attending for Game Design. We had an immediate connection, exchanged snapchat usernames, and talked every minute of every day after that. Soon, we started scheduling trips and vacations to come visit each other because talking on the phone just wasn’t enough, and we moved in together in August of 2019. Jenna started school (not at RIT because sometimes people change their majors, okay?!) and we settled into life together in Rochester, New York.

Our Family

After we moved in together, it was just the two of us and Jenna's cactus (RIP Jesús the Cactus- he only lasted 4 days after the move). A few months later we brought home Winnie and Frankie, Jenna's childhood dogs. We also adopted a cat, Diego, who is our precious pandemic baby. He has always been super spoiled, and he has us both wrapped right around his little toe beans. Shortly after adopting Diego, we moved across the city to a bigger place. In January of 2021, we decided to move across the city. We both attended classes virtually, and trying to participate in classes at the same time in a one bedroom apartment and both of our desks crammed into the bedroom was not working for us. The pandemic didn't seem to be slowing down, so our only choice was moving into a place where we could set up an office. With more space comes more cat zoomies, and it became clear that Diego needed a friend to play with him. Winnie and Frankie wanted to spend their golden years snoozing and sunbathing, and they did not have time in their very busy schedules to play tag with the cat. So, on clear the shelter day, we decided on a whim to go see if there were any cats that might be able to keep up with Diego. If you know us, you know that "going to the shelter to look at cats but we are absolutely not bringing a cat home. But let's bring the carrier just in case we do bring home a cat" is actually code for "hey! Let's go get a cat!" So that's what we did. It was love at first sight, and Jenna could hardly bear leaving Shuri in the cage while we went to go sign adoption paperwork. We brought her home, and she fit in so perfectly. Just after Trent accepted his job offer for Epic, Frankie passed away at home. He had been with us through so much of our lives, and we don't go a single day without thinking about him. We eventually did have to leave the house we lost him in, and we made the move to Madison, Wisconsin. In Jenna's free time, she started volunteering with the cats at the local animal shelter. Trent told her that we are not getting another cat under any circumstances. Until the circumstances happened to be that Shuri was too energetic and Diego had mellowed out too much. We decided to get our cat a kitten, and Mishka has completed our perfect little family. And even better, Jenna finally agrees that we have enough cats!

The Proposal

October 23rd, 2021

During the summer of 2020, Trent and Jenna were desperate to find some way to get out of the house while still staying away from people. They started taking the dogs for car rides to trails a bit further away from their house, just for something to do. Their favorite was the Erie Canal Trail, because at the halfway point of their walk was a local ice cream chain. It was the perfect opportunity to sit and eat by the water, take a break from the walk, and let the dogs rest. When they moved across the city and were too far away to frequent that trail, they knew they had to find another one of the ice cream shop's locations closer to them. Luckily, there was not one, but two locations in the same park about 5 minutes from their house. The park was on Lake Ontario, and there was also a beach and a pier. This was the best possible news for Jenna, who grew up next to Lake Huron. Being able to visit that park so often reminded her of home. From late spring to early fall, Trent and Jenna would walk the pier every night, and often they would go get ice cream from once of the ice cream shops. They never could figure out why there were two of them in one park, but they certainly weren't complaining either. After getting their ice cream, they would sit in their favorite gazebo and watch the water while they ate until they were too chilly or it got late. In fall of 2021, Trent was starting to act suspicious. He would ask Jenna "subtle" questions about what kind of engagement ring she wanted, and would look at rings when he thought she wasn't paying attention. Jenna started making sure her nails were always done. Finally, after keeping her waiting anxiously for a couple months, he told her that he wanted to have a date night one Saturday towards the end of October. Jenna went to the salon early to get her hair done, and spent the day trying to perfect her nails. She got dressed up for date night, and when they were in the car, Trent blindfolded her and blasted music through her earbuds. It was pretty unclear for a while whether she was getting proposed to or murdered, but she figured she'd give him the benefit of the doubt, at least for a little while. After Trent drove around in circles for a little while to throw her off, he finally stopped the car and helped her out. He led her across the parking lot, and she could tell he was distracted because she walked into a tree, two lampposts, and tripped on curbs countless times before they finally reached their destination. This did not help ease Jenna's mind about the proposal vs getting murdered thing, but she was really trying to manifest not getting murdered. Trent changed the song that was playing to their song (no spoilers- it's our first dance song so you'll hear it soon enough!) and Jenna instantly started ugly crying. Trent removed her blindfold and gave a beautiful speech about love, before popping the question. Two realizations hit her at the same time- the first was that he took her to their beach to propose at sunset, and how beautiful she thought that moment was. The second was that she did a fantastic job manifesting the proposal! After she said yes, they walked the pier for a bit while Trent explained that the reason he had her walking around for so long was because there were people in their favorite gazebo, so he had to walk around for a while until he found an empty one. He was a bit disappointed that the people didn't vacate their favorite gazebo, especially after they must have seen him leading around a confused blindfolded girl back and forth by their gazebo several times. It made no difference to Jenna though. When they finished their walk, they celebrated by eating ice cream from their favorite place and watching the water in their new favorite gazebo.
