Flight
For our family and friends who are travelling from afar, Heathrow is the best airport to fly into as it is in west London, putting you in the right direction for Devon. We suggest avoiding Gatwick Airport because it will take you at least an hour to get across town, which is the last thing you want after a long flight!
House Or Rental
There are lots of hotel options in London...Hiltons, Marriotts etc. You can also find more economy hotel chains like the Premier Inn (very comfortable beds!) and Travelodge, of which there are many locations around town. Of course, AirBnB is another great option!
Travel Note
It's about a 4 hour drive from London to Hartland. The best way is to take the M4 from London; at junction 20 merge onto the M5 towards Bristol (west). At junction 27, take the A361 exit to Tiverton/Barnstaple. Follow the A361 and A39 to Ford Hill/B3248 in Hartland (there are quite a few roundabouts along this road, but keep on the A361 until you get to the A39). Once in Hartland find your cottage/B&B :) If you get lost along the way, just give us a call (Iain: 07748 605553 or Kevin, the best man: 07879 633476).
Rental Car
If you're flying into Heathrow and want to rent a car, rental companies like Hertz and others at the airport are the easiest option. If you're based in London then of course there are lots of centrally based options available. We definitely suggest renting a car (or using your own if you have one) as Hartland is very much in the countryside. Shops and amenities are not walking distance, and you will have to drive to pick up anything you might want or need. If you're looking to carpool then let us know and we'll connect people who want to do that :)
Train
From London Paddington you can take the train to either Barnstaple (which is a 40 minute drive to Hartland) or Tiverton Parkway (which is an hour and half drive to Hartland). Either way, you will need to either take a taxi (which can be expensive) or rent a car.
House Or Rental
There are lots of B&Bs in Hartland that you can Google quite easily, like Hartland Mill: www.hartlandmill.co.uk/our-rooms/ Alternatively, if you're a bigger group, then it's worth renting a house in or around Hartland or Stoke. Here are some suggestions of holiday cottages you can book directly: Little Barton: www.littlebartonhartland.co.uk/work Long Furlong Cottages & Spa: www.longfurlongcottages.co.uk/the-cottages/ Downe Cottages: downecottages.com/cottages If you're feeling more adventurous you can try camping! Stoke Barton Farm is the closest and best option - they even have 'Pixie Huts': www.westcountry-camping.co.uk. If a more traditional hotel is what you're looking for, then there are lots available in neighbouring Bideford (a 25 minute drive / taxi journey away from Hartland). Some suggestions are: Durrant House Hotel: www.durranthousehotel.com/ Premier Inn: www.premierinn.com/gb/en/hotels/england/devon/bideford/bideford.html?cid=GLBC_BIDCLO
