Pienza is the closest village to the Borgo and is a beautiful UNESCO World Heritage site that is the birthplace of Pope Pius II. A historic renaissance city, you can sign up for a historic tour, enjoy Aperol spritzes at a local caffé, stroll through Palazzo Piccolomini, or visit the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta. Pienza is also the home of the Pecorino di Pienza DOP, one of the oldest cheeses in the world, made with sheep’s milk. Try La Taverna del Pecorino and Enoteca Marusco e Maria to get a taste.

Montepulciano

Just 20 minutes from Pienza, Montepulciano is known for its two famous red wines, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and Vino Rosso di Montepulciano. There are countless places to sample the wine in town (Consorzio del Vino or Cantina de’ Ricci, notably), but you can also wander through the main corso and Piazza Grande , visit Sant’Agostino church (where Pulcinella sits at the top of its bell tower!), or explore the the ancient underground tunnels of the city (via Cantina Ercolani).

About an hour north of the Borgo, Siena is a beautiful city. Take a tour and learn about the famous Palio, a biannual horse race in the central piazza of Siena, and the seventeen unique contrade (neighborhoods) of the city.
