How We Met

Andrew and Hannah worked at the Air and Space Museum while they were in college in 2012. For most of the time they worked together at the museum, they rarely had overlapping schedules. Hannah was vaguely aware of Andrew at first. Andrew knew who Hannah was only because she was a direct superior. It was not until the summer of 2013 that their work schedules overlapped. Once they started working together more often, Hannah finally learned who Andrew was and found him attractive after her friend and colleague, Becca, showed her a photo of Andrew wearing a USA speedo on Facebook (posing in front of the Fountain in Geneva no less). Enamored by his physique and sense of style, Hannah abused her power as his superior to schedule them to work together at the same stations and times. Her orchestrated scheduling paid off. They spent a lot of time flirting at the Wind Tunnel Discovery Station in the Milestones of Flight Gallery (known for housing the Amelia Earhart plane). Andrew even bought Hannah an ice cream cake for her birthday that summer, where he met Charleston the cat for the first time. As the summer came to a close, Hannah knew she would be taking a new job soon to work for DC Public Schools. It turns out that both Hannah and Andrew planned on asking each other out at the end of August before she left. Andrew planned to wait to ask her out on her last day so that if she said no, he would not have to endure the awkwardness of seeing her again after the fact. Hannah was bolder. She asked him out a few days earlier and they went to their first "hangout" (they did not call it a date) at the sculpture garden, which then turned into a burger restaurant, then to a comedy club. If you would like to enjoy Andrew and Hannah's first date too, start with a walk through the Sculpture Garden, then visit BGR in Dupont Circle, and end the night at the Big Hunt (assuming these venues are still open after the pandemic).

The Proposal

On February 23rd 2019, Andrew and Hannah set their alarms early to wake up in time to see the sunrise over the Puerto Rican horizon. It had been Hannah's idea to get up early to see the sunrise, an idea that Andrew seemed highly encouraging of for some reason. After appearing nervous the night before, Andrew was quick to awaken to the alarm and help rush Hannah out of bed to go to the beach. Hannah was still wearing her pajamas; Andrew was dressed a tad bit nicer for some reason. They exited to the temperate climate of the Caribbean air to see the sunrise. They went out onto the dock and watched as the sun slowly came up over the tropical horizon, peering over the mountains but not quite piercing the clouds. Hannah decided to walk back to the beach, and happily found a pufferfish swimming along the dock. She and Andrew joyfully admired the pufferfish for several minutes. Then Andrew followed Hannah to the beach, remarking on how the sky "Still didn't look right". Not knowing what he meant, Hannah stayed outside a bit longer with a confused look on her face. The sky looked lovely to her. Eventually she was ready to go back to the hotel room and was about to leave, when Andrew offered her a one-time-use Christmas Coupon for "Anything Goes" that he had in his pocket. With nothing written in the request box, Hannah asked, "What do you want me to do?" and then Andrew pulled out a ring... and the rest is history. Upon an empty sunrise beach, their only witness was a single pufferfish in the shallow water, a fish that they have since nicknamed "Mr. Pufferfish." Scroll down for an image of the sunrise.
