HOW WE MET

IT ALL STARTED WITH A SWIPE...

Kaitlin and Jonathan's first date was on a freezing January afternoon at Max Brenner's in New York City. They planned to grab a hot chocolate to warm up, and walk around the famous Strand bookstore across the street. Kaitlin was immediately impressed with Jonathan's thoughtful planning skills, and the thought of a non-boozy first date meant they would know if they really liked each other by the end of the afternoon. They both made plans for the evening just in case either one of them needed an excuse to leave! Needless to say, the hot chocolate was delicious and they had a blast browsing the floors at the Strand. They shared a good laugh when Kaitlin almost accidentally ripped a page out of a very old copy of The Jungle Book in the antique and rare books section. Jonathan was mortified that their date might have just become a very expensive one. The book stayed in tact, the hours flew by and the rest is history! Max Brenner's and the Strand will forever be special to K&J.

THE PROPOSAL (HIS VERSION)

One month out, Kaitlin ("K") and I signed up for a Halloween 5K on Randall's Island, agreeing to grab shake shack afterwards then hike up to Central Park for some fall foliage. Halloween morning was super brisk, but the sun was shining and the views were stunning. K crushed the race with sub 8 minute splits and we were right on schedule, that is, until K started suggesting how the rest of the day should go (Oh and did I mention, I'd booked a paid by the hour professional photographer to stake out in Central Park at a very specific location and time). "OK - ready to grab Shake Shack?" (which was really all our timeline allowed). K paused, thought and replied "I don't know if I'm really in the mood for a burger anymore. What if we went, sat and got brunch somewhere?". After reeling her brunch aspirations back in, we settled on a breakfast sandwich to go. And of course, the first-choice restaurant was closed, so we scrambled to find a second. Once home, K, oh sweet sweet K, dressed herself in a pizza onesie, Jack (our pup-eroni) in a pizza slice costume and handed me a t-shirt that read: "you had me at Za". It was time for the annual Halloween photoshoot. Again, did I mention the photographer is paid by the hour? Jack and I obliged. After the shoot, I asked approximately how long until K would be ready for our trip to the park to which she replied, "Seriously, what's the rush, it's 12:30pm!?". My response, "I don't want to miss daylight!". Agitated that her Saturday was being rushed, she bundled up and we made our way to Central Park. We strolled our way to K's favorite spot and I secretly texted the photographer to make sure she saw us entering the hot zone. Surprisingly, right on time and then K asked to sit on a bench and enjoy for a little. Again, paid by the hour. It was finally go time. I got us to the designated spot and while some of it is a blur, I'll never forget the surprise on her face, her gorgeous smile and the crowd of strangers applauding.

THE PROPOSAL (HER VERSION)

10.31.2020

On the morning of Halloween 2020, I woke up excited to run a 5k on Randall's Island. I hadn't run a race in awhile due to a foot injury, and I was happy to be headed to an organized race during socially distant times. It speaks to how thoughtful J is that he had a Halloween card on my bedside table, because it didn't throw me off at all - he is just that sweet all the time. The plan was to run, grab some breakfast/brunch, dress up in the pizza costumes I had bought for Jonathan, Jack and I, take some pictures for the gram, and ride bikes in Central Park later in the day. When we got to the race, we were standing at the starting line 6 feet apart, and an NYC Runs employee asked me if I was running alone. I said yes, because I thought J and I would do our our own thing (since I love to run alone), but I didn't mean ALONE alone, just meant that we'd run separately! J still says that he felt like chopped liver, but I really didn't mean anything by it! I was clueless that anything was going on behind the scenes, so we finished the race and I figured we would have a leisurely Saturday after our pizza pics, and get to Central Park when we felt like it. J usually runs a tight schedule, so it didn't throw me off when he asked when I'd be ready when I was still sitting in our living room in my pizza onesie. I threw on a headband and bundled up because it was freezing, and also didn't think anything of it when he said "that's an interesting color" (thinking of how I would want to look in my soon to happen engagement photos). We headed up to Central Park (my favorite place), and started walking towards a pond on the Upper East Side near my old apartment. We chatted about life and how the park will always be special to us, and I wasn't thrown off because we are lucky to always have long chats and meaningful conversations. J popped the question at the perfect time and spot, and I'll never forget his sweet words and how sure I was that he is, and will always be my person.
