We met near the end of 2012 when Steph was a Peace Corps volunteer in Cuenca and attended a salsa class with low expectations. Her salsa teacher - Javi! - was pretty intriguing. Over time we became good friends and Javi introduced Steph to his community, helping her fall in love with Cuenca, Ecuador, and, well, Javi. In early 2014, Javi got the opportunity to live in Germany for a year at the same time Steph's Peace Corps service was coming to a close. Javi moved to Freiburg while Steph backpacked through South America, and eventually we met in Europe. Steph ended up moving right back to Cuenca and once Javi returned we celebrated surviving a year long-distance. Fast-forward 4 years, we're long-distance again. Steph is back in the Bay Area with a new job, adjusting to US life after 7 years in Ecuador while Javi continues to kick butt professionally and take English classes in Cuenca. We’re so excited for Javi to come experience the US for the first time - a bold move that’ll come with lots of adventures! // Nos conocimos en finales de 2012 cuando Steph era una voluntaria del Cuerpo de Paz y asistió a una clase de salsa con bajas expectativas. ¿Adivina quién era el profe? Con tiempo nos hicimos amigos y Javi presentó a Steph a su comunidad, ayudándole a enamorarse de Cuenca, de Ecuador, y de él mismo. En 2012 Javi se fue a vivir en Alemania por un año al mismo tiempo que el voluntariado de Steph estaba terminando. Javi se mudó a Freiburg mientras Steph viajaba por Sudamérica y eventualmente nos encontramos en Europa. Steph volvió a Cuenca y cuando Javi regresó celebramos haber sobrevivido un año a la distancia. 4 años más tarde, estámos a la distancia nuevamente. Steph está en California con un nuevo trabajo, reconectándose con su país después de 7 años en Ecuador y Javi sigue teniendo éxito profesional y tomando clases de inglés en Cuenca. Estámos tan emocionados para que Javi vaya a los EEUU por primera vez - un cambio grande que vendrá con muchas aventuras!

It's true - we're already married! Our next step is for Javi to join Steph in California, and for visa reasons it made most sense to get legally married quickly to start the immigration process. Steph and Javi had a beautiful civil ceremony on May 2, 2019 in Cuenca with the intention of having an epic fiesta later on with our friends and family - which brings us here. The timeline for a Marriage Visa is typically about a year, so unfortunately Javi won't likely be moving in with Steph until several months after Wedding #2 - but Steph's regular trips back to Cuenca are helping us through! // Es verdad - ya somos casados! Nuestro próximo paso es que Javi se muda a California para vivir con Steph, y por razones relacionadas con visas tenía más sentido casarnos pronto para empezar los procedimientos migratorios. Steph y Javi tuvieron un hermoso matrimonio civil el 2 de mayo, 2019 en Cuenca con la intención de tener una mega farra más luego con nuestros amigos y familiares - y aquí estámos! La línea de tiempo para una Visa de Casados típicamente dura un año, entonces infelizmente Javi probablemente no podrá mudarse a los Estados Unidos hasta algunos meses después de Boda #2 - pero los viajes frecuentes que Steph toma a Cuenca nos están ayudando mucho!
