Oaxaca state is located in south-central Mexico, just a one-hour flight from Mexico City. Oaxaca de Juarez also known as Oaxaca City is in the center of Oaxaca state. It is not only the capital city but also the state’s cultural, historic, artistic, and agricultural hub.
Aside from drinking too much mezcal, you’re in little danger in Oaxaca. In fact, Oaxaca is one of the safest states in Mexico. During our previous visit to Downtown Oaxaca, we were amazed at how safe the city really is. We recommend to stay within 5 blocks of Templo de Santo Domingo.
Verizon and T-Mobile are able to get coverage through Telcel. Other LTE devices should also have coverage. Make sure you are aware of your provider’s international data rates and roaming fees (if applicable). We have set up a WhatsApp group to communicate updates and answer questions you may have about our wedding week. https://chat.whatsapp.com/GbRlCIuYcEz0SCMVXRWpJZ
We arrive Tuesday, October 31st, and depart on Monday, November 6th.
Children are welcome to attend, but we encourage our guests to utilize this trip for relaxation and fun. If bringing children, please add their names to your RSVP. Quinta Real Hotel rooms with double beds will only accommodate up to (3) adults or (2) adults and (2) children.
Oaxaca is beautiful this time of the year. Temperature ranges from 60 to 80 degrees with plenty of sun and slight humidity. Showers are infrequent but do occur. We recommend shorts/shirts during the day and pants/long sleeves (with a light outer garment) at night. Please read the 'Schedule' web page for recommended attire for each of the hosted events. It is VERY IMPORTANT to bring flat-soled walkable shoes for getting around Oaxaca. The streets and sidewalks are very old with uneven pavement.
NO. The city is very walkable! You will need a cab/shuttle to and from the airport (about 20-25 mins to the city center). You can walk just about everywhere once you get to the center of town. Make sure to bring flat-soled shoes as the city has many uneven pathways.
The current exchange rate is 17 Pesos/$1 USD, however exchanges will provide you slightly below this rate. Please make sure to bring your passport AND driver's license/ID to the exchange. Please be aware that your credit card may have foreign transaction fees; some banks waive the fee. While you can exchange money at most international airports, we recommend you only exchange very little (<$100) to get you by. The OAX airport taxi service accepts credit cards and will get you to the hotel. Once in Downtown Oaxaca, we recommend you exchange at the "Money Exchange" booth located in a local indoor mall on the first floor (google location below). Festivities begin on October 31st and end on November 2nd. This holiday dates all the way back to the Mayans and Aztecs, who celebrated their (deceased) loved ones. November 1st is oriented towards deceased children, and November 2nd is towards adults. This holiday is NOT equivalent to Halloween! Participants are encouraged to bring photos to place on altars (one will be available at our hotel). Not all things from Mexico are open to adoption by members of other cultures. The Day of the Dead is! This is a practice of remembering your past ancestors. Most people shop during the day (at the local markets/stores) and watch the parades in the evening (right after sunset). Local markets ("mercados") include Santo Domingo Plaza (canopies on NW/SE sides of the church), Zocalo Plaza, Mercado "20 de Novembiere" (mostly food), and Mercado "Benito Juarez" (mostly merchandise). The primary parade streets are on Calle Maceconio Alcala and Calle Manuel Garcia Vigil with most parades ending at the Santo Domingo Plaza. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1-zxK7xPPIxHoecvFRZXMQgFjsoCgsKqayefDwt1D7qw/edit?usp=sharing
Please book your hotel AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE and airfare by March. Airfare will range from $400-$1000 (depending on your origin and when you purchase). Quinta Real Hotel rooms will range between $250-$325/per night. We negotiated with the hotel to reduce the price (trust us, you won't be disappointed). Quinta Real will not charge for your room until your actual stay. Please reference the discount rate under "Yulissa & Daniel's Wedding." Plan to budget $75-$100/person per day in spending.
“Dia de Muertos” is one of Mexico’s biggest holidays (Nov. 1st/2nd). Oaxaca is also the top destination for this week. Early hotel reservations are highly recommended (as soon as you RSVP) and airfare by March. For guests departing from Los Angeles, Volaris offers one of the few direct routes. Their annual sale happens around ~March 13th every year! There are also direct flights from Dallas (American Airlines) and Houston (United Airlines). It is recommended to transfer in the US instead of Mexico City.
