Some people say the beach at the base of the 200-foot tall Mohegan Bluffs is the most beautiful on the island, harboring a secluded, if rocky, place to swim and surf. It’s a bit of a climb to get there, however, with a set of 141 steps leading down to the sand. Make the effort and the payoff is spectacular, with clay cliffs that offer one of the most dramatic views of the Atlantic in all of Rhode Island, and a vista that can extend all the way to Montauk on the tip of Long Island. The steps are easy to find – there’s a plaque at the Bluff overlook, commemorating the history of the bluffs (Mohegan Bluffs got their name from a Native American battle dating to 1590, where 40 members of a Mohegan raiding party were said to have been driven off the cliffs to their deaths by the Manisseans, the victorious natives of the island). Mohegan Bluffs is also the 5th stop on the Block Island Bicycle Tour.
Taking a break out of your regular workday world gives you time to ponder the big questions of life. On Block Island, there’s a narrow circular walkway lined with stones called the Sacred Labyrinth, where you can unplug from the ubiquitous distractions of the modern world and enjoy the peace and quiet of a walking meditation. When you get to the center of the circle, there’s a place to sit and enjoy the views overlooking Sachem Pond, North Lighthouse and the ocean beyond. Listen for the sounds of the birds—and possibly for answers from the universe. And be sure to look inside the wooden box tucked under a crabapple tree. You’ll find notebooks where previous visitors have recorded their own personal thoughts brought on by their visit to this special spot. Share your own musings if you’re so inclined.

While not exactly an uplifting site-to-see, Block Island’s graveyard features interesting headstones dating back to the late 1600s and wonderful views to the east and north. At this well-maintained, sprawling resting place, not only will you recognize the names of quite a few long-standing Block Island families (Ball, Champlin, Dodge, Littlefield, Rose), but you’ll also get a wonderful look at vast New Harbor. The Historical Society Museum offers guided tours of the island cemeteries (see above for further details). Intersection West Side Road and Center Road.
If you’re looking for natural peace and quiet, this 190-acre parcel on the northeast part of the island contains some of the island’s most spectacular scenery. To reach the trail, look for a post marker on the right side of Corn Neck Road, about 3 miles from town and across from a big yellow farm house. Turn right down the dirt road and go straight for one-third of a mile until you reach a parking area. If you travel by bike, leave it at the rack at the trailhead and head in on foot. About 1/3 mile down the trail, you’ll come to an intersection. Go right and you’ll get to a beautiful sandy beach that’s off the beaten path enough to be almost deserted. Turn left and you’ll walk along picturesque bluffs and take in gorgeous vistas all around. At the top of the trail is what locals call “the maze”, a series of interconnected, unmarked paths where you can wander to your heart’s content.

My FAVORITE jewelry spot on the island. Mary MacGill, the brand, is the organic evolution of my creative journey, which began at the age of 13, when tea with my mentor Kazuko Oshima instilled my desire to become a jewelry designer. After starting my career with a fine-jewelry company in New York City, I returned to my family home on Block Island, Rhode Island, and began hand hammering gold and weaving wire with semi-precious stones. Inspired by the ocean, grasses, and evolving coastline, I created my first collection and sold the designs at the local farmer’s market. The response I received prompted me to establish Mary MacGill Jewelry.
