We went whale watching last summer and it was a blast! Only for those with sea legs as Monterey Bay drops to deep ocean sea levels quickly, we were able to see tons of humpback whales and even a blue whale (the largest mammal on Earth).
This kayak company offers launch points from several spots (some closer to our venue than others). We recommend Elkhorn Slough a nature preserve and cioppino at Phil's around the corner afterwards.
A state park with tons of walking paths and amazing views! A short drive south of Monterey.
The aquarium in Monterey Bay is world renowned with a unique eco system and the first ever living kelp forest! Fun at any age if you're in town for a few days.
17 Mile Drive is a picturesque road along the coast (a 10 minute walk from our venue). Along the drive are coastal lookouts and stopping points, a great 30 minute drive if this is your first trip to the area.
A short drive north lies Phil's and the best cioppino you will ever eat. If you're not familiar with cioppino it's an Italian-American fish stew with a savory tomato broth originating in San Francisco. Moss landing is a great spot to kayak, in the Elk Horn Slough coastal preserve.
If you prefer beer to wine this is a great Northern California brewery with a beer garden!
We love a good chardonnay and Bernardus makes one of the best in the area. This winery is a short drive from Monterey, if you'd prefer to try several wineries at once we've noted a few of our favorite tasting rooms in Carmel below.
Great tasting room right near one of our favorite cheese shops. Enjoy a tasting of wine then cheese or pickup supplies for a picnic near the beach.
Another great tasting room, wines made by a local music composer (who has music in Forrest Gump, The Avengers and more).
It may seem odd for us to include a cheese shop, but it's a few doors down from Hahn tasting room and has literally one of the largest selections of cheese and most informed staff we've ever met. Try as many cheeses as you want!
A great Mediterranean restaurant if you're in Carmel-by-the-Sea. After a day exploring Ocean Avenue this is a great place for dinner, often they have live music.
A favorite of locals and visitors have several local seafood options prepared to perfection. Great if you're staying in Monterey.
