Punaluʻu Beach

Punaluʻu Beach

HI

Punaluʻu Black Sand Beach is a unique and fascinating destination located on the Big Island of Hawaii, specifically in the Kaʻū district, only an hour and thirty minute commute from our venue location. The volcanic activity on the Big Island contributes to this distinctive feature. The beach is renowned for its black sand, which is formed from basalt lava that has cooled and broken into tiny fragments. Coconut palms fringe the upper edge of sand and you may also discover large honu, (Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles), basking on the beach. Although it may be tempting, do not touch these protected turtles and do not remove any black sand from the beach. Although swimming isn't ideal, there is a picnic area and restroom facilities so you can have lunch while you experience the unique feeling of black sand between your toes.

Hiilawe Falls

Hiilawe Falls

HI 96743

Hiʻilawe Falls is one of the most iconic and stunning waterfalls on the Big Island of Hawaii. The falls themselves are not directly accessible by road or trail from the lookout due to the steep and rugged terrain. For those who wish to get closer to the falls, hiking into Waipiʻo Valley is an option. Be aware that the valley floor is accessible only by foot, 4-wheel drive vehicles, or guided tours. The hike is strenuous and involves navigating steep terrain so if you are not an avid hiker, I would suggest enjoying the views from afar at the Waipi'o Valley Lookout location. Hiʻilawe Falls is one of the tallest waterfalls in Hawaii, with a height of approximately 1,300 feet (400 meters). It is known for its impressive vertical drop and the way it flows over the sheer cliffs of the valley. Hiʻilawe Falls stands out as a majestic and breathtaking feature of Hawaii's natural beauty, and it’s a highlight for those exploring Waipiʻo Valley and the surrounding areas.

Papakōlea Green Sand Beach

Papakōlea Green Sand Beach

Naalehu, HI 96772

Papakōlea Green Sand Beach, also known as Mahana Beach, is one of the most unique and striking beaches in the world, located on the Big Island of Hawaii. Papakōlea Green Sand Beach is situated in the southern part of the Big Island, near South Point (Ka Lae), which is the southernmost point of the United States. The beach is relatively remote and not easily accessible. The beach is famous for its distinctive green sand, which is caused by the presence of the mineral olivine, also known as peridot. Olivine is a volcanic mineral that forms when lava cools and crystallizes. Over time, the olivine crystals have eroded and accumulated on the beach. The primary ways to reach it are by hiking or taking a 4-wheel drive vehicle. The hike to the beach is approximately 2.5 miles one way, and it can be challenging due to the rugged terrain. Its unique green sand, combined with its remote location and striking scenery, makes it a must-see for adventurous travelers exploring the Big Island.
