Panicale (20 minutes away), is a small, ancient and very well-kept hamlet with views of Lake Trasimeno. Start your tour in the beautiful Piazza Umberto I, and you can take one of the roads to the left that will circle the town and bring you back to the piazza, passing through Piazza Masolino, with its ancient tower (13th century).
The restaurant Masolino is just off the main piazza. This one of the best restaurants in the area, and has been active for more than 50 years. It serves excellent local dishes, and has a balcony with views of Lake Tasimeno. The balcony is much requested, so book at least a week in advance, if possible.
Lillo Tatini Restaurant is set in a beautiful location overlooking the piazza of Panicale. In the summer, tables are set on a small, delightful terrace. High quality, slightly more expensive than the average. Special gluten-free menu also available. Open for lunch and dinner, closed Mon.
The boutique hotel Il Rastrello has a fantastic terraced garden with views of the lake. Not to be missed. For an aperitivo (it opens at 17.00), for dinner or for Sunday brunch. You can check their menus on www.rastrello.com. Tel. for booking 075.8379175. Usually in the summer a saxophone player plays during aperitivo on Thursdays.
Il Gallo nel Pozzo, in the piazza, is also good and has tables outside. Salads, soups, cutlets and cheese, some pasta plates and meat with vegetables of the season. Some of the ingredients are organic (tomatoes, salads, beans including the local “fagiolina del Trasimeno”). Tel. 075.837285 – 327.1283536.
The pretty piazza of Panicale is very popular for evening aperitivo before dinner (towards 18.30 – 19.00). Several bars with outside tables offer this, with a few dishes for dinner, if you want to stay on. For example: DivinPeccato Caffè, on the right, as you enter, or Il Caffè della Piazza, on your left.
The only supermarket open on Sunday morning and Sunday afternoon (closed for lunch) is Gala, which is also the closest supermarket. Open every day and all day long from Monday to Saturday.
In addition to Gala, other supermarkets you will find in Tavernelle are Coop, Conad, that also has a kitchen that prepares dishes daily to take away (lasagna, cannelloni, vegetables, meat, etc) and Eurospin, a good discount supermarket. If you exit the Coop mall from the main entrance and you turn right, and then right again, you will see a few greenhouses on your left. You can stop here and buy fresh fruit and vegetables from a farmer. Shop hours: Mon.- Sat. + Sun. morning; closed at lunch time
