The Wedding Website of Alexe Cooney and Wes Schmidt
Ocracoke is not very easy to get to, but we promise it's worth it! Ocracoke is the island furthest south on the Outer Banks, and is only accessible by ferry. There are three ferries that travel to the island: Hatteras, Swan Quarter, and Cedar Island. All three are car ferries. If you fly into Norfolk, the Hatteras ferry terminal is about a three hour drive from the airport. This ferry runs roughly every 30 minutes throughout the day in the summer on a first come, first served basis, and is free. It takes about 1 hour. If you fly into Raleigh, it's roughly a three hour drive to the Swan Quarter ferry. This ferry runs four times a day in high season at 7 am, 10 am, 2 pm, and 4:30 pm, and costs $15. You must buy tickets online ahead of time. The ferry takes about 2.5 hours. The Cedar Island ferry is a 5.5 hour drive from the Charlotte airport and runs four times a day in high season at 8 am, 10 am, 1 pm, and 4:30 pm. It costs $15 and takes 2 hours and 15 minutes.

Travel Note

Ferry Information

If you plan to take the Hatteras ferry, you can't book it ahead of time. When you arrive at the terminal you will be assigned to a line and depending on the time of day and how many cars are ahead of you, you might have to wait for one or two ferries to come and go before you get your turn. Bring snacks and games! There are shops with bathrooms right next to the ferry line. If you take the Swan Quarter or Cedar Island ferries, book your tickets online ahead of time. Arrive at the ferry terminal a bit before your scheduled departure (we recommend 15-30 minutes) and you will be let on shortly before your departure time. We cannot vouch for Cedar Island, but the Swan Quarter ferry is pleasant as can be! It has a large indoor passenger deck with plenty of seating. Bring a cribbage board and before you know it, you'll be on Ocracoke!

House Or Rental

Ocracoke Island Realty - Vacation Rentals

Ocracoke Island Realty is the main realty company on the island, and has many rentals available. The houses are typically rented on a weekly basis with weekend turnovers either on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday. Make sure to read the fine print as many of the rentals don't come with linens (although you can rent them for a nominal fee!).

House Or Rental

Hotels, Motels, Rentals, Cottages, B&Bs, Camping, etc

This link will take you to the "places to stay" section of the Ocracoke visitor's guide. There are many different types of accommodations on the island, and this guide organizes by type of place and then gives many options for each. Things to note: -When booking a place, don't worry about location too much! The village of Ocracoke is very small, and anywhere you stay will be great. -The Pony Island Inn is a classic Ocracoke hotel that also has a breakfast restaurant onsite. -There are a limited number of airbnbs and vrbo rentals available if you want to go that route. -If you are staying in a rental house or cottage, be sure to check if it includes linens and towels as many rentals do not! You are able to rent them during your stay for a small fee but need to let the rental company know.
