It all started in Mrs. Langston's 4th grade classroom in 2007. Kayla was new to Sacred Heart and befriended her now bridesmaid, Hailey, when Hailey said something along the lines of "I can help you talk to boys." Although Hailey didn't really help Kayla talk to boys, she did introduce her to the "cool" boys in their class, including Tristan. Kayla and Tristan became good friends, playing king of the hill at track meets and the floor is lava, freeze tag, and basketball at recess. In February 2008, Tristan asked Kayla to be his valentine, and she said yes, as she had a crush on him at the time. But, their teacher told the class that 4th grade is too young to have valentines. Tristan then asked Kayla if she still wanted to be his valentine. Out of all the times Kayla could’ve picked to be a rule follower, she picked this time, telling Tristan “No, Mrs. Langston said we can’t have valentines.” A year later, Kayla still had a crush on him and asked a mutual friend to ask Tristan to be her boyfriend for her. She saw the 2 boys talking and assumed the deed was done. However, nothing had changed between them, Kayla never followed up on it, and Tristan has no recollection of being asked to be her boyfriend. Throughout middle school, Kayla and Tristan continued to grow closer until they became best bros in 8th grade when they became co-8th grade representatives for student council. Freshman year of high school, Tristan casually asked Kayla to be his homecoming date. She said no because she had heard that another boy was planning to ask her. Immediately after saying no, Kayla sought Tristan’s cousin Yenny’s advice, stating that she wants to go to homecoming with Tristan but told him no. With help from a few people, Tristan got down on one knee with a brownie in hand at lunch, and asked Kayla again to be his date. Kayla said yes, and the whole cafeteria cheered. With all the time spent together at extracurricular activities, hanging out with friends, studying, and making fun of each other, the line between friends and more than friends began to blur. One night during senior year, Kayla texted Tristan asking if he still likes her, and of course he still did. They knew that becoming more than friends would risk their friendship and potentially require being long distance during college, but they decided it’d be worth it. On January 23, 2016, Tristan asked Kayla to be his girlfriend after watching her cheer at a basketball game. Throughout the years, Kayla has fallen in love with Tristan’s selflessness, patience, intelligence, and his funny, awkward personality. The muscles and athleticism are nice too. For 4th grade Tristan, it was love at first sight (so he says… with Tristan’s memory, Kayla doubts he even remembers the first time he saw her). Tristan’s love for Kayla’s kindness, goofy sense of humor, passionate spirit, and love for adventure still continues to grow to this day. Together, they’ve enjoyed being family-oriented, watching sunrises and sunsets, being active, and taking turns visiting each other. After 6 years together, Tristan planned to propose during Kayla’s spring break in Atlanta. However, they experienced a series of unfortunate events during their hiking trip. The road to Georgia's highest peak where Tristan planned to propose during sunset was closed due to snow. Tristan then planned to propose at a waterfall but Kayla slipped on ice twice, and all the pictures from the trip on their friend’s camera vanished. On March 14, 2022, Tristan took Kayla on a bike ride date at Piedmont Park, one of her favorite date plans in Atlanta. Kayla was out of breath from riding a rental bike with a flat tire (another unfortunate event) and was glad Tristan suggested taking a break. At a beautiful spot in the park, they admired the lake and the skyscrapers while Tristan told Kayla all the things he loves about her. With a ring instead of a brownie this time, Tristan got down on one knee once again and asked Kayla to marry him!
