A flight from New York (JFK) to Ecuador’s international airport of Guayaquil (GYE) takes about 7 hours direct. From Guayaquil, Cuenca can be reached by 4 hour car ride or a 45min flight to CUE airport.

You are in luck! Ecuador uses the U.S. Dollar and therefore there is no need for conversion. While most places take credit card (Visa and Mastercard preferred), bringing cash in the form of small bills is helpful when shopping at small markets.
